Required Qualifications
  • Minimum one year of recent experience as a Labor and Delivery RN
  • Valid RN license in compliance with state regulations
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA/ARC)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
Preferred Qualifications
  • AWHONN Fetal Monitoring Certification
  • ACLS and STABLE certifications (AHA / ARC)
  • Other certifications and licenses may enhance eligibility
Summary

The Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse provides comprehensive patient care in an obstetric setting, including assessment, treatment, and collaboration with the healthcare team during labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period. The role requires strong clinical skills, critical thinking, excellent communication, and a commitment to patient safety and professional ethics.

Essential Work Functions
  • Communicate labor and delivery procedures to patients and families, providing reassurance and addressing concerns
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments per obstetric nursing protocols
  • Prepare equipment and assist physicians during labor, delivery, and examinations
  • Provide immediate postpartum care, including assessment and stabilization of mother and newborn
  • Educate patients and families on postpartum recovery, breastfeeding, and newborn care
  • Collaborate with obstetricians, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, and other team members to deliver cohesive care
  • Respond to obstetric emergencies, including preeclampsia, hemorrhage, or fetal distress, using evidence‑based protocols
  • Document patient care, assessments, and interventions accurately in the medical record
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance maternal and neonatal outcomes
  • Perform fetal monitoring and interpret results
  • Assist in cesarean sections and other obstetric procedures
  • Comply with all regulatory standards, hospital policies, state laws, and federal guidelines for obstetric nursing care
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of labor and delivery nursing
Required Essential Skills
  • Critical thinking, service excellence, and strong interpersonal communication
  • Proficient reading, writing, and verbal communication in English
  • Ability to read and comprehend written instructions and follow verbal instructions; basic PC skills
  • Physical abilities: remain stationary, move equipment (50‑100 lbs), push, pull, and bend
  • Interpersonal skills: work effectively with a variety of personnel in a professional manner
  • Technical/motor skills: fine manipulation, push/pull, and movement during procedures
  • Mental requirements: cope with frequent public contact, meet deadlines under pressure, work with or without supervision, and maintain concentration during irregular schedules
  • Sensory requirements: visual acuity and effective communication
