About the Role

The Sandia National Laboratories Radiation Protection (RP) organization seeks an experienced Health Physicist (HP) within the RP Policy & Administration Department. This position is part of the RP Training and Education (RPTE) group, responsible for developing and maintaining initial and continuing education training programs for RP health physicists and managers, and for implementing radiological emergency response training in collaboration with emergency response partners.

Job Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain and execute the health physics training program for new hire HPs and RP managers.
  • Develop, maintain and execute continuing training program for HPs and RP managers.
  • Develop, maintain and execute emergency response initial qualification and continuing training programs for RP responders.
  • Collaborate with the RP Emergency Response Coordinator, Sandia Emergency Management, and internal/external partners to plan and execute radiological drills and exercises.
  • Provide operational health physics supervision and guidance to line customers within the SNL functional mission spaces.
  • Support the safe use of radioactive sources and operation of radiation-generating devices (RGDs) and provide guidance to users of regulated operational health physics environments.
  • Continuously improve the radiological protection program, implementing new controls and best practices.
  • Participate in the development of the Corporate Radiation Protection Program and related tools and guidance.
  • Maintain a DOE Q‑level security clearance throughout employment.
Key Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Health Physics, Radiological Sciences, Nuclear Engineering, or closely related field with five (5) or more years of directly related operational health physics experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with 10 CFR 835 and/or 10 CFR 20, 10 CFR 830, and industry training standards.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q‑level security clearance.

Desired:

  • Certification by the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) or in the process of obtaining certification.
  • Proficiency with standard computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, databases).
  • Experience developing and implementing a DOE or NRC operational radiation protection training program.
  • Experience providing operational health physics support for safe use of radioactive sources and RGDs.
  • Experience in a regulated operational environment such as DOE or NRC radiological facilities or Naval reactors.
  • Track record of excellent organizational and leadership skills, with the ability to work independently and lead teams in fast‑paced, regulatory‑driven environments.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, and customer‑relations skills.
  • Ability to analyze situations and recommend policy or procedural changes.
Salary Range

$102,400 – $199,700 (estimated; final determined by experience and geographic differential)

Additional Information

All work must be performed 100% onsite. Some travel may be required. The position involves working with or in the presence of hazardous materials, including ionizing and non‑ionizing radiation, chemicals, biological hazards, noise, and ergonomic hazards.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q‑level security clearance. Sandia requires a pre‑employment drug test, background review, and may require additional security checks for candidates with Medical Portable Electronic Devices (MedPEDs).
