* * Position Summary
** This position serves as the central point of contact between the Department for Public Safety, the San Juan College Community and General Public. This position is responsible for receiving incoming calls for security services, dispatching officers as appropriate, monitoring alarm systems, video surveillance displays and campus emergency alert program as well as properly documenting requests.
MAJOR DUTIES
* Receives telephonic calls concerning crimes, emergencies, and other requests for security assistance.
* Contacts San Juan County Dispatch as needed to obtain outside agency assistance such as Fire, EMS and Police.
* Operates a computer aided mobile dispatch (CAD) system, and a multichannel radio console.
* Controls electronic access to campus secured areas; monitors the departments video surveillance camera and intercom systems.
* Monitors fire and burglar alarms and I.T. alarm systems for all campus buildings.
* Broadcasts orders to security officers in vicinity to investigate complaint or requests for service when appropriate; relays instructions or questions from remote units.
* Coordinates emergency alert system in the event of a campus emergency.
* Provides Badge , parking permits and digital/ink fingerprinting services for the campus community.
* Relays radio and telephone messages between security officers and the campus community.
* Responds to questions from walk-in and telephone traffic.
* Performs various clerical duties including completing the electronic dispatch log and filing reports.
* Completes appropriate notifications to campus personnel and administrators during emergency situations.
* Serves as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
* Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
* Skill in records maintenance.
* Public-related communication skills.
* Computer data entry skills.
* Clerical, word processing, and/or office skills.
* Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations over the telephone or in person.
* Ability to effectively operate a multichannel radio console.
* Ability to perform multiple tasks and solve problems in a technical setting.
* Knowledge of radio dispatch regulations, procedures, protocols, and/or equipment.
* Knowledge of fire and burglar alarm systems reporting.
* Skill in the use of computers and Computer Aided Dispatch software.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS The Access and Control Lead assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES Guidelines include San Juan College behavioral conduct codes; related local, state and federal laws; OSHA guidelines; the San Juan County Emergency Operations Plan; and college and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
* The work primarily consists of routine service calls and dispatching duties for the college campus. The necessity of preparing for unforeseen emergencies and unusual circumstances, as well as making determinations and ensuring guidelines are properly followed contributes to the complexity of the position.
* The purpose of this position is to serve as the central point of contact between the Department of Public Safety Staff, campus community and general public and to provide clear communication and assistance. Success in this position contributes to the overall safety of the college community.

* Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, representatives of local law enforcement and emergency response agencies, students, and members of the general public.
* Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, to provide services, or to motivate or influence persons at times in emergency situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
* The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table. This position occasionally lifts light objects and may need to distinguish between shades of color.
* Work is performed in and office or computer room.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
* High school diploma or equivalent is required.
* Must demonstrate work experience and education sufficient to thoroughly understand and be able to answer questions and resolve problems. Previous experience in a similar position preferred.
