Music Teacher (Grades 5-8)

To provide an approved education program and establish a class environment that fosters learning and personal growth; to help students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for continued education; and to maintain good relationships with parents and other staff members.

Compensation:
Base Salary-Certified-$73,500, (Adv. Degrees $3,000 for masters, $5,000 for doctorate). $200/ year for applicable experience.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required. (Masters preferred) Valid New York Instructional Certificate and Subject Area Endorsement or eligibility. Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation. Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary. Demonstrate working knowledge of the use of various technological software and equipment for tasks such as, but not limited to, word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual presentations, and telecommunications.

Understand the requirement to maintain confidentiality concerning charter school-related matters. Knowledge of child growth and development, individual differences in ability, personality and interests and learning/motivational techniques. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students. Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth. Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.

Knowledge of grade specific school curriculum and concepts, including all subject matters taught. Knowledge of Smart board functions and tools. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work; parents, students and faculty etc. Meet such alternatives to the above qualifications as the school director finds appropriate and acceptable.

Essential Performance Responsibilities (The following description is illustrative of tasks and responsibilities. It is not meant to be all inclusive of every task or responsibility.) The Music Teacher will:

  • Works to achieve state core curriculum content standards and charter school educational goals and objectives by promoting active learning and skills development in the classroom.
  • Teaches students through an approved course of study using board-adopted curricula, textbooks and other appropriate teaching materials.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides opportunities for individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  • Sets specific objectives wherever possible in lesson preparation and weekly lesson plans and carries through presentation to effectively achieve these objectives.
  • Assesses student academic progress and personal growth toward stated objectives of instruction.
  • Maintains records of student's educational progress in class record books and/or board approved forms and summarizes these marks for reporting purposes.
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and resolving learning problems.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a music classroom climate conducive to learning.
  • Budgets class time effectively.
  • Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to inform them about the school music program and to discuss student progress.
  • Devises written and oral assignments and tests that require analytical and critical thinking as well as the reproduction of facts.
  • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
  • Works with students to leave the music practice area clean at the end of class time.
  • Maintains professional competence and continuous improvement through inservice education and other professional growth activities.
  • Participates in school-level planning, faculty meetings/committees and other school system groups.
  • Makes effective use of community resources to enhance the instructional program.
  • Upholds and enforces school rules, administrative regulations and board policy.
  • Instruct students in music appreciation and the fundamentals of performing music for an audience.
  • Prepare participatory lesson plans and establish course goals including music appreciation and performance of songs, both vocal and instrumental;
    Select and demonstrate instruments and other materials for courses to students.
  • Observe and evaluate students' work to determine student progress or to make suggestions for improvement;
    Accompany students on field trips to musical presentations.
  • Instruct students to take "virtual trips" to concert halls or musical presentations, via internet;
    Specialize in teaching one or more types of music, such as group choral.
