Middle School Permanent Substitute Teacher

Under the general supervision of the School Principal and Assistant Principal, the Permanent Substitute Teacher plays an integral role in supporting a positive, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment by ensuring continuity of instruction during teacher absences. The Permanent Substitute fosters a safe, respectful, and engaging classroom climate where all students feel valued, supported, and empowered to learn. Working collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and support staff, the Permanent Substitute implements lesson plans provided by classroom teachers or the school, maintains consistent instructional routines and behavioral expectations, promotes student engagement and academic growth, and models professionalism, flexibility, and a commitment to the school's mission and values.

The Permanent Substitute communicates effectively with students and staff regarding instructional activities and student needs, contributing to a culture of collaboration, accountability, and excellence that supports the success and well-being of every learner.

Essential Performance Responsibilities:

• Provides high-quality instructional coverage in the absence of classroom teachers across multiple grade levels and subject areas, ensuring continuity of learning and maintaining established classroom routines and expectations.
• Implements lesson plans, instructional materials, and classroom procedures provided by the regular teacher or school staff, supporting meaningful student engagement and academic progress.
• Creates and maintains a safe, inclusive, respectful, and well-managed learning environment where all students feel welcomed, supported, and encouraged to participate.
• Builds positive relationships with students while fostering a classroom culture that promotes respect, responsibility, collaboration, perseverance, and a growth mindset.
• Utilizes effective classroom management strategies to reinforce school-wide expectations and promote positive student behavior in accordance with district policies and procedures.
• Demonstrates flexibility by adapting instructional strategies, pacing, and classroom supports to meet the diverse academic, social-emotional, and behavioral needs of students, including students with disabilities and multilingual learners, as appropriate within the scope of the assignment.
• Monitors student engagement, participation, and well-being throughout the instructional day, providing encouragement, redirection, and support as needed to maximize learning opportunities.
• Supervises students in classrooms and other school settings, including hallways, while maintaining a safe and orderly environment.
• Collaborates and communicates effectively with teachers, administrators, counselors, support staff, and other school personnel to ensure a seamless instructional program and address student needs.
• Accurately follows district and building procedures related to attendance, student supervision, emergency protocols, confidentiality, technology use, and other operational expectations.
• Demonstrates professionalism, dependability, integrity, sound judgment, and discretion in all interactions with students, families, colleagues, and members of the school community.
• Maintains flexibility and responds positively to changing assignments, schedules, and school needs while contributing to a collaborative and solution-oriented school culture.
• Participates in faculty meetings, professional learning opportunities, school events, and other assigned activities to strengthen school-wide initiatives and support continuous professional growth.
• Models the district's mission, core values, and commitment to equity, inclusion, student well-being, and academic excellence in all aspects of the role.
• Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal or designee that support the efficient operation of the school and the success of all students.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of current instructional best practices, educational pedagogy, and evidence-based teaching strategies that promote active student engagement and academic success.
• Knowledge of differentiated instruction, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and instructional practices that support the diverse academic, social-emotional, linguistic, and behavioral needs of all learners.
• Knowledge of middle school curriculum, instructional standards, and age-appropriate teaching practices across content areas.
• Knowledge of classroom management strategies that foster a safe, inclusive, respectful, and productive learning environment.
• Knowledge of student development, adolescent learning, and practices that promote positive relationships and student well-being.
• Knowledge of applicable federal and New York State laws, regulations, and district policies related to education, student privacy, safety, and instructional practices.
