Substitute Nurses - District Wide School Year
Compensation:
Registered Nurse (RN): $35.00 per hour Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN): $29.00 per hour
Qualifications and Experience
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice in New York State, or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) working under the supervision of a district RN
- Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification
- Experience in pediatrics and/or public health
- Prior experience in a school nursing or acute care setting preferred
- Knowledge of diabetes treatment, including insulin pumps and pens
- Knowledge of seizure management
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to perform skilled nursing procedures, including: catheterizations, gastrostomy care and tube feedings, insulin administration, nebulizer treatments
Primary Responsibilities
Substitute School Nurses provide health services to students and staff and may be required to consult on immediate health-related concerns. Responsibilities include consulting with students, staff, and families, and providing appropriate documentation and follow-up to the School Nurse, Building Principal, and/or Nurse Coordinator.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Administration of medications and treatments
- Providing care for illnesses and injuries
- Following Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) and emergency care plans
- Maintaining accurate and appropriate documentation of all health encounters
Specific Duties
- Collaborate with Building Administration and the Nurse Coordinator to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and community-based providers
- Protect and maintain student health in accordance with professional nursing standards and New York State licensing requirements
- Provide first aid and emergency treatment for students and staff as needed
- Administer medications as ordered by a physician and authorized by a parent/guardian, in compliance with NYS regulations
- Document all health services in accordance with the NYS Nurse Practice Act and report appropriately to the School Nurse, Building Principal, and Nurse Coordinator
- Complete student and staff accident/insurance reports
