The Departments of Biological & Environmental Sciences and Chemistry & Physics in the Cook-Cole College of Arts & Sciences invites applications for a Science Laboratory Technician/Laboratory & Research Specialist I (00472) to begin on or after July 25, 2026.
The primary responsibilities and duties of the position include the following:
- Provide instructional support for laboratory and research activities through preparation of reagents, gels, agarose, and other material, as requested
- Provide coordination of lab setup and teardown including glassware cleanup and sterilization
- Maintain accurate inventory of equipment valued at levels established by state and university regulations for the Department of Biological & Environmental Sciences
- Assist with tags and asset management for both departments
- Serve as the building coordinator for Chichester Science Center, submit building work orders, facilitate key and card reader access, assist with space management requests, and coordinate with Facilities Management and other offices on campus
- Serve as primary contact person for sensitive equipment monitoring to respond appropriately to alarm notifications
- Coordinate with faculty in both departments to maintain organization, upkeep, and facilitate improvements of teaching spaces, storage areas, and displays in the Chichester Science Center
- Coordinate ordering to reduce redundancies and maintain stock of frequently ordered items
- Coordinate with faculty and staff in both departments to schedule and facilitate equipment maintenance visits and other services such as lab coat cleaning
- Perform non-technical routine maintenance on a wide range of instruments and equipment
- Plant and animal care and husbandry for research and teaching
- Assist in maintenance of Longwood Greenhouse
- Assist with transportation coordination for field laboratories
- Coordinate laboratory student worker assistance to faculty
- Facilitate biological waste handling and bio-hazardous material decontamination and disposal
- Assist the Academic Safety Specialist in maintaining inventory of chemicals housed in teaching and research laboratories and insuring compliance with environmental safety regulations for chemical hygiene and hazardous waste management
This position is located in Farmville, Virginia, and is required to work in person on Longwood University's campus.

Requirements:- Preference for candidates with a B.S. degree in a laboratory-based science or equivalent training / work experience; additional preference given to those holding a M.S., or higher degree, in Biology or closely related discipline
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and communication skills required
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) preferred
- Preference given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following: preparation of laboratory materials, plant/animal care, instrument/equipment maintenance/repair, bio-hazardous waste handling, and/or training in inventory management systems
