Academic Coordinator

This is an AT-WILL position for which the attainment of non-probationary status (tenure) is not available. Grant funded; continued employment is contingent upon funding. The Academic Coordinator will report to the UBMS Project Director and will manage the daily operations of the project as it relates directly to project participants. The Academic Coordinator will also supervise the On-Site Tutors in the target schools.

The Academic Coordinator will work closely with the Project Director to plan, coordinate and organize the academic year and summer components of the project. The UBMS Academic Coordinator is a full-time, 12-month position dedicated 100% to the UBMS project. Salary:

Work Hours:

Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Friday 7:30 a.m.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Selecting participants, assessing their individual needs, and prescribing individualized services.
  • Providing academic, career, personal, and financial aid counseling for program participants.
  • Obtaining all pertinent proof of eligibility documentation for participants.
  • Maintaining all prescribed records for project participants and any other records as may be necessary to achieve the objectives of the project.
  • Monitoring progress of project participants as they work toward achievement of their individual goals.
  • Planning and organizing seminars, field trips, banquets, etc.
  • Organizing and supervising Summer Component activities.
  • Organizing and supervising Summer Bridge activities.
  • Coordinating UBMS tutoring services.
  • Scheduling extra help sessions for participants with grade deficiencies.
  • Monitoring On-Site Tutors, providing advice and assistance when needed.
  • Conducting training workshops for On-Site Tutors.
  • Tracking graduated UBMS participants.
  • Perform other program-essential tasks as needed or as requested by the Project Director or the Associate Dean of Planning, Research & Student Success, to facilitate the essential functions of the Upward Bound Math and Science project.
  • Qualifications

    The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • A minimum of Bachelor's degree in a math, science, technology or engineering (STEM) related field is required.
  • Three (3) or more years' experience in STEM education and/or research is required.
  • Experience working with rural, disadvantaged, or academically challenged youth, preferred.
  • Must possess exemplary teaching, organizational, youth leadership, and time management skills; must be familiar with financial planning and postsecondary financial aid requirements; must be able to demonstrate expertise in verbal and written communications; with preference given to those with TRiO program experience and a background similar to the target population are preferred.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient computer usage.
  • Demonstrated basic math skills essential for budget transactions and outlay.
  • Knowledge of administrative procedures.
  • Supervisory skills and office management.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills used in program management and report writing.
  • Possess personality traits needed for effective counseling of adolescents as well as traits needed for effective program teamwork.
  • Understanding and ability to comply with all policies of the Alabama Community College System, and the College.
