Senior Director - Global Tax Controversy

Midwestern US

Hybrid work policy – 3-4 days/week in office weekly – NO REMOTE

Our client, a large global market leader with a diverse and complex business that also happens to have of the most sophisticated tax departments in the Fortune 50, is seeking a Senior Director, Global Tax Controversy to lead its U.S. federal income tax and international audit team. This individual will drive the company’s global controversy strategy, partner directly with senior leadership, and play a central role in shaping global tax governance framework.

This is a high-visibility role with oversight of federal and international audit strategy, tax litigation and appeals coordination, and global controversy governance across all regions. The ideal candidate will bring deep IRS controversy experience, strong international tax exposure, excellent leadership capability, and the ability to influence at the highest levels of a large, complex global organization.

This position offers:

  • Lead the U.S. federal income tax audit practice and international controversy strategy, partnering with regional COEs to identify, evaluate, and de-risk exposure across this company’s global footprint.

High visibility and direct impact

  • Serve as the company’s internal controversy expert — the “go-to” strategist advising senior leadership on risk identification, audit outcomes, financial forecasting, settlements, and governance.

Complex and high-stakes work

  • Oversee IRS relationships, manage major audit cycles, coordinate litigation and appeals, and drive the defensibility of this company’s most material tax positions.

Team leadership and development

  • Manage and develop a team of four high-performing controversy professionals responsible for executing audit strategy, financial forecasting, IDR response strategy, and global governance initiatives.

Ideal Candidate Profile
  • 10+ years of blended tax experience in a large multinational company, Big 4 firm, law firm, or federal government
  • Significant hands-on IRS controversy experience, including large case audits, strategy development, and issue resolution
  • Strong experience with U.S. outbound international tax matters
  • MST, JD, or CPA required
  • Experience with tax litigation or appeals (preferred)
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and cross-functional influencing skills
  • Proven ability to manage teams, drive strategy, and operate confidently in a fast-paced, complex environment
