Overview
The LPN/LVN in Specialty Clinics functions as a member of the team as assigned. Provides direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse and/or licensed provider. The LPN/LVN delivers safe, effective, and compassionate care to Veterans in specialty areas such as cardiology, pulmonology, urology, podiatry, orthopedics, general surgery, ENT, pain, gastroenterology, dermatology, and eye clinics.
Qualifications- United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. - English Language Proficiency
- Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in both spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
- Education:
Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by NLNAC at the time the program was completed. Exceptions include health care education in the military service or training recognized by the licensing body. - Licensure:
Full, active, current, and unrestricted licensure as an LPN/LVN in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or District of Columbia. May qualify under Grandfathering provisions for current VHA employees who meet criteria. - Grade Determinations: GS-3 through GS-6 with the corresponding experience and qualifications, including demonstrated nursing care ability and supervisory aspects as described by the occupation standards.
- Initiates, performs, and completes assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations.
- Carries out patient care based on patients' conditions and uses judgment in selecting the order and sequence of procedures and treatments; accurately recognizes, reports, and records relevant patient information.
- Prepares, administers, and documents prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and/or intravenous) as permitted by local policies and procedures; observes and reports patient responses and any changes in condition to the RN or MD/DO.
- Recognizes urgent or emergent patient care situations; seeks assistance from the RN/MD-DO and initiates appropriate emergency interventions as directed.
- Maintains safety by recognizing equipment issues, safety hazards, and supply deficiencies; reports to appropriate personnel for corrective action.
- Interacts with patients and families to promote positive relationships, effective communication, and courteous service; respects patient privacy and dignity in all aspects of care delivery.
- Demonstrates skills in supporting complex diagnostic tests or procedures, including preparing patients, assisting in examinations, handling specialized equipment, and monitoring patient condition before, during, and after procedures.
- Serves as a preceptor in orienting and training less experienced LPNs/LVNs, NAs, or HTs related to more complex duties.
