Assistant Foreman – Carpentry Shop
Summary of
Job Duties:
The Assistant Foreman – Carpentry Shop supports the Foreman and management team in coordinating daily maintenance operations within an assigned campus zone or skilled trades shop. This position provides frontline leadership to maintenance staff, assists with work order prioritization, monitors quality and safety, and serves as acting foreman in the absence of the Foreman.
Working as a leader who combines technical skill with supervisory support, the Assistant Foreman ensures university buildings, systems, and infrastructure are maintained in a safe, reliable, and customer‑focused manner. This role drives productivity, accountability, business process alignment, and service excellence while supporting preventive maintenance and operational goals across campus.
Regular, reliable, and non‑disruptive attendance is an essential job function of this job, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalency
- Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in building maintenance, skilled trades, facilities operations, or related field
- Leadership experience such as lead worker, crew leader, trainer, or acting supervisor
- Experience working with multiple building systems and maintenance practices
- Experience with CMMS systems, email, and standard computer software
- Valid driver’s license in good standing
Preferred Qualifications:
- Technical certificate, apprenticeship, or associate degree in a related field
- Trade license or certification (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, etc.)
- Experience in higher education, healthcare, or institutional facilities
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
- Experience supervising multi‑trade work crews
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of building maintenance methods, tools, and safety practices
- Ability to lead and coordinate daily work activities
- Strong troubleshooting and decision‑making skills
- Ability to read plans, schematics, and technical documents
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to prioritize multiple assignments in a fast‑paced environment
- Ability to train and develop staff
- Strong attention to detail and follow‑through
- Knowledge of multiple building systems and maintenance practices
- Ability to use CMMS systems, email, and standard computer software
This position requires regular field work in campus buildings, mechanical rooms, rooftops, and outdoor environments. Work may involve lifting, climbing ladders, confined spaces, and responding to weather or emergency events. Evening, weekend, and on‑call work may be required.
Salary Information$56,123 – $63,138; commensurate with education and experience.
