Job Description

Title: Self-Contained Teacher Assistant
- Exceptional Children’s Program

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Qualifications

Minimum of 24 semester hours completed in any discipline with passing Work Keys Assessments. Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children. Ability to solve minor problems and follow detailed written and oral instructions.

  • College transcript showing a degree was earned.
  • College transcript showing at least 48 college-level courses completed (CCS HR does not count remedial/pre-requisite courses).
  • College transcript showing at least 24 college-level courses completed plus Work Keys Assessments with passing scores:
    Workplace Documents (Reading) – Score 4 or better, Business Writing – Score 3 or better, Applied Mathematics – Score 4 or better.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists the teacher with planning, organizing, and evaluating instructional activities; developing classroom procedures; preparing necessary materials; and presenting instructional activities as directed by the teacher.
  • Participates in activities to improve the total school program.
  • Assists the teacher in ensuring a safe and healthful environment.
  • Demonstrates clerical and technical skills necessary to assist the implementation of the program.
  • Assists students with the understanding of rules and regulations.
  • Assists in maintaining cleanliness and neatness.
  • Conducts self as a positive role model.
  • Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.
  • Serves as team player and role model for other employees; demonstrates commitment to continuous quality improvement; supports and exhibits organizational core values of caring, respect, integrity, responsibility, high expectations, being customer-driven, and valuing fairness.
Basic Life Operational Functions
  • Walking within the classroom, to and from buses, cafeteria, recreational areas, and other areas in the school and at school related activities away from the school.
  • Climb stairs as needed.
  • Stoop, kneel and sit on floor to interact with students.
  • Physically assist students in completing various motor activities.
  • Grasp scissors and writing implements to teach fine motor skills and to complete required planning activities.
  • Running when necessary to demonstrate motor skills and when necessary to maintain children in the designated instructional area.
Essential Physical Functions
  • Provide physical restraint when necessary.
  • Feed students with disabilities who cannot feed themselves.
  • Lift and transfer students to and from wheelchairs, the floor, mat tables, the toilet and the bus, etc.
  • Assist students with personal hygiene, including changing diapers, menstrual pads, etc., during the school day.
  • Have finger dexterity and be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of kneeling, sitting, standing, walking, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitive motion.
  • Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) when requested, for purposes of driving a school bus.
  • Provide CPR when necessary.
Essential Visual And Auditory Acuity Functions
  • Visually track and supervise movements of children.
  • Read IEP’s and other printed material.
  • Have auditory acuity necessary to be aware of student verbal behavior and other auditory cues necessary for effective classroom management.
Special Requirements

Background check with local and state law enforcement agencies required.
