Job Description

Title: Self-Contained Teacher Assistant – Exceptional Children’s Program

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 24 semester hours completed in any discipline with passing Work Keys Assessments.
  • Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children.
  • Ability to solve minor problems and follow detailed written and oral instructions.

Application Requirements:

  • All applicants must upload a resume and one of the following:
  • College transcript showing a degree was earned.
  • College transcript showing at least 48 college‑level courses completed (CCS HR does not count remedial or prerequisite courses).
  • College transcript showing at least 24 college‑level courses completed plus passing Work Keys scores (Workplace Documents – Reading 4+, Business Writing 3+, Applied Mathematics 4+).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists the teacher with planning, organizing, and evaluating instructional activities; developing classroom procedures; preparing materials; presenting instructional activities as directed.
  • Participates in activities to improve the total school program.
  • Assists the teacher in ensuring a safe and healthful environment.
  • Demonstrates clerical and technical skills necessary to implement the program.
  • Assists students with understanding rules and regulations.
  • Assists in maintaining cleanliness and neatness.
  • Conducts self as a positive role model.
  • Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.
  • Serves as a team player and role model for other employees; demonstrates commitment to continuous quality improvement and core values of caring, respect, integrity, responsibility, high expectations, customer‑driven, and fairness.

Basic Life Operational Functions:

  • Walking within the classroom and school areas.
  • Climbing stairs as needed.
  • Stoop, kneel, and sit on floor to interact with students.
  • Physically assist students in completing motor activities.
  • Use scissors and writing implements to teach fine motor skills and plan activities.
  • Run when necessary to demonstrate motor skills or maintain children in the instructional area.

Essential Physical Functions:

  • Provide physical restraint when necessary.
  • Feed students with disabilities who cannot feed themselves.
  • Lift and transfer students to/from wheelchairs, floor, mat/table, toilet, and bus.
  • Assist students with personal hygiene, including changing diapers and menstrual pads.
  • Perform basic life operational functions requiring finger dexterity, kneeling, sitting, standing, walking, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitive motion.
  • Obtain Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) if requested to drive a school bus.
  • Provide CPR when necessary.

Essential Visual and Auditory Acuity Functions:

  • Visually track and supervise movements of children.
  • Read IEPs and other printed material.
  • Have auditory acuity necessary to be aware of student verbal behavior and other auditory cues for effective classroom management.

Special Requirements: Background check with local and state law enforcement agencies required.
