Position Overview

As a Librarian I in Youth Services, you will connect children, teens, parents, and caregivers with engaging resources, personalized recommendations, and exceptional library services. Provides welcoming, responsive, and customer-focused service to youth, parents, caregivers, and other library customers in person, online, and by telephone
Assists customers in locating and selecting information and materials in a variety of formats to meet their educational, recreational, and informational needs
Provides assistance with digital resources and technology, including computers, printing, online resources, and other library equipment
Staffs youth services desks and other service points according to an established schedule, responding to customer questions and providing knowledgeable assistance
Develops, presents, and evaluates engaging, age-appropriate programs for youth from birth through grade 12 on a variety of topics, including literacy, science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics
Participates in the planning, coordination, and implementation of youth programs and special events to support library goals and community needs
Creates attractive and informative displays, brochures, promotional materials, and other resources to highlight library services, collections, programs, and resources
Promotes youth services, programs, and resources through positive customer interactions and creative outreach efforts within the library and community
Collaborates with coworkers and participates in department and system-wide initiatives to enhance youth services and provide innovative library experiences
Contributes to a dynamic, welcoming, and inclusive youth services environment by supporting daily operations, maintaining organized service areas, and responding to the evolving needs of young customers and their families
Minimum QualificationsGraduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in library science is required. Trainee applicants must have completed at least 75% of required course work towards an MLS and submit a letter from the Dean of the Library School that states the number of credit hours already obtained and that the candidate can complete all master's degree requirements within 12 months.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of current materials in children's literature, technology, periodicals, newspapers, and electronic services related to youth services
Knowledge of library procedures, collection management, library systems, and library services
Knowledge of readers' advisory methods, resources, and sources
Knowledge of basic library reference services, customer assistance practices, and library card registration requirements
Skill in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, with coworkers, customers, community members, and other stakeholders
Skill in using computers, accurately manipulating a keyboard, navigating the Internet, and searching online public access catalogs (OPACs) and specialized library databases
Ability to instruct customers in the use of electronic resources, library content, photocopiers, fax machines, public computer reservation software, self-checkout equipment, and other applicable library technology
Ability to operate audiovisual equipment and perform basic troubleshooting on computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, and other library technology
Ability to develop, organize, coordinate, and present engaging programs for assigned age groups and communicate information effectively to management and community groups
