Position: English Language (EL) Coordinator/EL Teacher

Position Summary

The English Learner (EL) Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the school's English Learner (EL) program. The coordinator ensures that students receive timely academic and behavioral interventions, monitors intervention effectiveness through data analysis, and oversees compliance with state and federal requirements related to English Learner identification, services, and progress monitoring.

The EL Coordinator serves as a collaborative leader who works across departments to ensure equitable access to academic success and student support services.

This position reports directly to the Dean of Students & Culture and works closely with the Director of Exceptional Children, Assessment & Accountability Coordinator, Assistant Principal of Instruction, School Counselors, and instructional staff. This role will support classroom instruction and program activities for multilingual learners, including students learning English. This role works closely with classroom teachers and program leaders to strengthen students' English language development, literacy, and academic skills;

build strong relationships with families; and ensure required program documentation is complete and accurate.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities EL Identification and Services
  • Coordinate English Learner identification, placement, and annual review processes.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local EL requirements.
  • Monitor EL student service delivery and documentation.
  • Maintain EL records and reporting systems.
EL Progress Monitoring
  • Monitor academic progress and language acquisition of English Learner students.
  • Coordinate language proficiency assessments and required reporting.
  • Track EL student performance and support service effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with teachers to ensure appropriate accommodations and instructional supports.
Family Engagement
  • Serve as a point of contact for EL families regarding program services and support.
  • Coordinate translation and interpretation services as needed.
  • Support family engagement initiatives for multilingual families.
Student Support
  • Assist teachers in delivering instructional activities for multilingual learners.
  • Provide small-group and one-on-one support to strengthen students' English language development, literacy, and academic skills.
  • Reinforce lessons introduced by the teacher and support students in completing assignments.
  • Help students understand classroom instructions and learning materials while encouraging participation and positive behavior.
  • Conduct meetings, conferences, and phone conversations in Spanish and English.
  • Provide culturally responsive support to students and families.
  • Build positive relationships with students and families and communicate effectively about student progress and needs.
  • Maintain accurate records of student participation, activities, and services, and assist program leaders with documentation required for compliance.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of student information and program records.
  • Maintain portfolios containing samples of students' work and records of their academic development.
Collaboration and Leadership Cross-Functional Team Support
  • Collaborate with the Director of Assessment & Accountability to monitor student performance and intervention outcomes.
  • Partner with the Director of Exceptional Children regarding students receiving multiple services.
  • Work with the Dean of Students & Culture to address attendance, behavior, and student support concerns.
  • Support the Assistant Principal of Instruction in identifying instructional trends and intervention needs.
Professional Development
  • Provide training related to EL processes and requirements.
  • Support staff understanding of intervention strategies and language access requirements.
  • Assist teachers in implementing accommodations and support plans for EL students.
Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Education or related field.
  • Valid North Carolina educator license.
  • Minimum of three years of successful educational experience.
  • Experience using student achievement and intervention data to inform decision-making.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
