Primary Purpose of the Organization

Fayetteville State University’s Office of Access & Student Success encourages and assists families in the Sandhills Region of North Carolina, who are traditionally underrepresented in post-secondary education, with preparation for, entry into, and completion of a post-secondary degree.

The TRIO Student Support Services Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education to provide structured academic support activities to low‑income and first‑generation college students. The goal of SSS is to increase college retention and graduation rates. The services provided create opportunities for academic development, assist students with basic college requirements, and motivate them toward successfully completing their post‑secondary education.

Purpose of the Position

The Student Success Coordinator serves as the primary academic intervention and student success professional for the TRIO Student Support Services Program. The position is responsible for coordinating comprehensive academic support services that promote student persistence, retention, and graduation among eligible low‑income, first‑generation college students and students with disabilities.

The Student Success Coordinator provides individualized academic coaching, case management, and proactive interventions for students experiencing academic challenges while coordinating tutoring services and implementing evidence‑based student success strategies. The position exercises delegated supervisory oversight of peer tutors, peer mentors, and assigned student employees and provides limited fiscal management for designated program activities in accordance with university policies and federal TRIO regulations.

The position works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and campus partners to ensure participants receive comprehensive academic and support services that contribute to successful degree completion.

This position is funded by non‑state funds and has been designated time limited. Continuation of this position is contingent upon the continuing availability of those funds.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in counseling, student affairs, social work, education, or a related field from an accredited institution and three years of related experience in student success, academic advising, counseling, case management, retention, or another student support function. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.

Skills And Abilities
  • Knowledge of TRIO SSS objectives, participant eligibility, and compliance standards (646.3–646.4).
  • Understanding of the educational transition needs of veterans and adult learners.
  • Ability to implement data‑driven retention strategies and interpret academic‑performance metrics.
  • Strong facilitation, advising, and case‑management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Blumen, and online learning or collaboration platforms (e.g., Teams, Canvas, Zoom).
  • Must have knowledge of the PK‑16 pipeline
  • Be familiar with Education Department General Administrative Regulations ( EDGAR )
  • Have the ability to successfully implement college level programs related to student success
  • Must possess strong leadership, interpersonal and presentation skills.
