The City of Fayetteville’s Police Department is seeking a Radio System Administrator to provide a variety of complex technical work in the day‑to‑day and long‑term operation of a multi‑agency trunked radio system and related infrastructure; develop and maintain a database of all radio system users and channel access templates.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Responsible for the first line maintenance and management of the radio system’s components and infrastructure. Perform professional‑level tasks to include designing system enhancements; programming code plugs, uploading code plugs into radios and base stations, solution engineering, and specialized installation of radio communications equipment. On‑call after hours, to provide support.
- Provide skilled technical support of radio technology, equipment and systems for internal and external users, in conjunction with City of Durham Radio System personnel; analyze, troubleshoot and repair technical software, hardware, and other radio technical communications issues.
- Consult and work with users to define programming needs; make recommendations on channel allocation and assignment, test and document outcomes of programming changes; work with users on configuration issues.
- Assist in the equipment upgrade and purchasing selection process; make recommendations relating to vendor proposals for the operation, maintenance, upgrade or purchase of new equipment; maintain contact with vendors to obtain information on new or modified products.
- Perform the development, testing, implementation, and maintenance of new radio systems technology. Coordinate staff, contractors, or other outside resources in the development and implementation of systems applications and equipment. Work with management to determine needs and acquire equipment, software, applications and contractual resources.
- Coordinate scheduling of routine and preventative maintenance and repair for all radio communication systems and networks.
- Inspect and ensure radio communications equipment is in compliance with federal, state and local regulations; ensure the City maintains appropriate FCC licenses assigned to the 911 Communications Center.
- Assist the 911 Systems Analyst in performing first level troubleshooting and maintenance of all Uninterruptible Power Supplies, generators and 911 furniture mechanisms.
- Prepare, maintain and update various records and files including maintenance logs, usage logs for billing of outside agencies, radio equipment inventory, parts listing and inventory; prepare reports as necessary.
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
- Two years of increasingly responsible technical experience in full spectrum trunked and conventional radio communications systems, electronic equipment installation, maintenance or repair, or a related field. Experience in emergency communication systems preferred.
- Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in electronic or communications engineering or a related field.

Possession of an appropriate, valid driver’s license and ability to maintain insurability. - Possession of a Motorola training program certificate or the ability to obtain one within one year from the date of hire.

- Must be able to pass a North Carolina Criminal Justice Network (CJIN) security screening within thirty (30) days of hire.
From the time of closing, the selection process is anticipated to last approximately 4‑6 weeks. The process will consist of a panel interview with the selected candidate being subject to a pre‑employment drug screen, a background investigation, driving history check and a polygraph/CVSA to be conducted by the Police Department.
