Engineer II (NS), Position Number , Grade NC18
OverviewThe Signal System Timing and Operations (SSTO) section is part of the Mobility and Safety Division. The SSTO section is responsible for optimizing and retiming new and existing signal systems, as well as establishing policies, procedures, practices, and standards for signal system timing statewide.
Responsibilities- Design, prepare, implement, and optimize traffic signal system timing plans.
- Evaluate proposed traffic signal system operations.
- Aid divisions in resolving traffic signal system problems.
- Evaluate plans prepared by private engineering firms (PEFs).
- Ensure plans are accurate, efficient, safe, and meet national and state standards.
- Use traffic signal modeling software such as Synchro, Sim Traffic, Tru‑Traffic, Translink 32, Centracs, and Kinetic Signals.
- Provide technical experience, analysis, and assistance to municipalities with citywide computerized traffic signal systems.
- Communicate complex engineering concepts in a clear, concise, and organized manner.
- Make independent recommendations and decisions requiring specialized engineering knowledge.
- Serve as a technical expert in traffic signal system timing.
- Work independently and travel frequently, including overnight trips when required.
- Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an accredited institution.
- Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid State of North Carolina Class C driver’s license.
- Desired registration as a professional engineer in North Carolina.
- Knowledge of traffic signal timing, phasing, and operations.
- Strong communication skills and experience writing technical reports, memos, and emails.
- Ability to read, review, and interpret engineering plans.
- Ability to apply engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
- Capability to work cooperatively with diverse stakeholders and NCDOT personnel.
Grade NC18: $63,927.00–$
