OverviewThis advanced specialized professional nursing position manages the daily operations of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program services, implementing annual addenda and budget, coordinating patient services, and ensuring timely screenings for early detection and treatment. The nurse practices independently and demonstrates autonomous decision‑making skills.
Responsibilities- Coordinate assignments, plans, and clinics of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program and oversee overall quality of services.
- Develop and provide ongoing training for agency staff and staff providing program services.
- Track and follow up on all abnormal findings from pap smears and mammograms in Family Planning and the program.
- Organize annual Breast Cancer and Heart Disease Awareness activities.
- Conduct triage of patients who call or present to clinic.
- Conduct patient interviews to determine health status, birth‑control concerns, and needs.
- Cross‑train in Family Planning/Teen Wellness to provide coverage during staffing shortages or serve as backup to the Family Planning Clinic Coordinator.
- Provide contraceptive methods, subject to appropriate training, when working in Family Planning.
- Respond to public health emergencies as requested by the Health Director, including outbreak investigations, mass dispensing or immunization clinics, disaster relief, and other incidents.
- B.S. in Nursing with a Public Health Nursing rotation and two years of Public Health nursing experience, or Master’s in Public Health and a professional nursing degree with two years of nursing experience, or professional nursing degree with three years of nursing experience including two years of Public Health experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Current valid North Carolina Registered Nurse license issued by the N.C. Board of Nursing.
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Background check and negative drug test required.
- Strong knowledge and skills in nursing theory, practices, and principles in public health settings.
- Knowledge of available resources and ability to coordinate them.
- General knowledge of current social and economic problems related to public health, including health disparities.
- Ability to plan, coordinate, and oversee work of others, deal tactfully with others, exercise good judgment, and make decisions.
- Ability to work in partnership with patients and other service providers, elicit needed information, and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to accurately record services rendered, interpret and explain records, reports, and medical instructions.
- Proficient computer skills for communication, patient record documentation, and access to information.
- Must complete an introductory course in principles and practices of public health nursing within one year of employment, if required by program policy.
- Provide updated college transcripts within 30 days of hire if selected for the position.
- Applicants educated outside the U.S. or its territories must have academic degrees validated as equivalent to a U.S. regionally accredited degree.
