Summary:

Licensed Practical Nurse, LPN coordinates office activities related to the clinical setting or as directed by the Practice Manager. Assist the Practice Manager in coordinating clinical personnel activities in order to provide efficient patient flow and adequate staffing. Provides effective communication and relationships with Providers, Patients and Staff, to ensure exceptional healthcare for all our patients.

Major Job Functions

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:

  • Coordinate staff assignments and activities in the clinical areas, to include monitoring of those activities.
  • Assist with the interviewing and selection of new clinical employees.
  • Maintain environment of patient advocacy within the nursing scope of practice.
  • Assist clerk/receptionist with ICD and CPT coding, input to computer for billing, insurance, and Quality Assurance purposes.
  • Perform/ensure that quality and safety checks have been performed on all waived testing equipment and supplies.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of nursing care given to patients under his/her supervision and participates in Quality Assurance activities.
  • Recognize life-threatening situations and respond appropriately.
  • Maintain NC Immunization Branch requirements of continuing education and documentation.
  • Administer and record treatments, medications, and therapies as prescribed by physician.
  • Provide patient education on chronic diseases and treatments as directed by provider within the LPN scope of practice.
  • Provide staff education in conjunction with the Clinical Educator(s) as needed.
  • Assist in obtaining or obtain prior authorizations for diagnostic testing and medications as required by payers.
  • Gather information and evaluate needs of patients via phone or in person and direct them to the appropriate services location as directed by the provider.
  • Coordinate and communicate with outside healthcare partners such as home health, hospice, Durable Medical Equipment (DME) companies, community paramedics, and Accountable Care Organizations (ACO), to carry out the provider directed patient plan of care.
  • Perform component of well visits or physicals as directed by the provider.
  • Perform phlebotomy tasks as required to include utilizing proper handling, storage, and transportation of specimens.
  • Assess, prioritize, plan, direct, evaluate, and document patient care activities.
  • Participate in Performance Improvement activities such as periodic chart, immunization log, and Waived Testing audits, as well as InBasket reviews for responsiveness of staff to facilitate the quality of care provided.
  • Assist with office procedures and provides medical treatment to patients as directed by the providers.
  • Assist provider and other staff with evaluation and treatment of patient's needs such as dressing changes, wound care, staple/suture removal, performing time-outs, etc.
  • Properly handle and prepare reusable instruments for return to Central Sterile Processing for sterilization.
  • Perform High Level Disinfection of equipment and treatment areas as required.
  • Oversee ordering clinical supplies and medications in a timely manner and maintains an on-going inventory.
  • Actively participate in cost containment

Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:

Education and Formal Training:
  • High school graduate or equivalent required
  • Current licensure in North Carolina as a Licensed Practical Nurse or Compact state licensure required
  • American Heart Association BLS Instructor required within 90 days of employment and must remain active thereafter
Work Experience:
  • 2 years of experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse required, preferably in a physician office setting
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required:
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the English language
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills
  • Verbal and written skills required
  • Has knowledge of the age-specific physiological and psychosocial needs of the patients typically served
  • Ability to organize and use critical thinking in stressful situations
Physical Requirements:
  • Speech and auditory acuity for communication of patient needs
  • Visual acuity for observation of patients
  • Long periods of standing, walking, bending, and lifting
  • May involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material
  • Ability to work under mental and physical stress is necessary
