Position: ELECTRIC SUBSTATION CREW LEADER

Electric Substation Crew Leader

Fayetteville Public Works Commission is seeking an experienced Electric Substation Crew Leader to oversee and participate in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electric substations that support our transmission and distribution system. This role provides leadership and technical expertise for field crews responsible for maintaining critical substation infrastructure, ensuring reliable electric service for our community.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with strong technical knowledge of substation equipment, protective relaying, and high-voltage systems who can effectively coordinate work activities while maintaining a strong commitment to safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and participate in the installation, maintenance, and repair of substation protection and control systems.
  • Direct crew activities involving transformers, voltage regulators, load tap changers, circuit breakers, DC power systems, and associated substation equipment.
  • Plan and coordinate daily work activities, including site investigations and job preparation.
  • Assist with load switching processes and outage restoration efforts.
  • Install and maintain primary and secondary control circuits, conduit systems, and communication cabling.
  • Inspect, test, troubleshoot, and maintain relays, reclosers, SCADA equipment, metering systems, and fiber optic communications.
  • Support preventive and predictive maintenance programs for substation equipment.
  • Troubleshoot wiring, relay, communication, and fiber connection issues.
  • Operate equipment including bucket trucks, backhoes, and other utility construction equipment.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Train, mentor, assign work to, and monitor lower-level technicians and crew members.
  • Complete work orders, timesheets, maintenance records, and other required documentation.
  • Respond to emergency outages and participate in restoration activities as needed.

Qualifications

  • Option A:
    Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronic Technology or a related field plus 1 year of experience in the construction, maintenance, or repair of electrical facilities.
  • OR
  • Option B:
    Associate degree or technical certification in a related field plus 3 years of experience as a Senior Substation Technician, including lead worker responsibilities.
  • OR
  • Option C:
    High school diploma or equivalent plus 5 years of experience in the construction, maintenance, or repair of electrical facilities.
  • OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Knowledge & Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of substation construction, maintenance, and repair practices.
  • Experience working with protective relays, communication systems, and high-voltage equipment.
  • Working knowledge of fiber optic communication systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot substation equipment and control systems.
  • Strong understanding of electrical safety practices and regulations.
  • Ability to lead crews, assign work, and train employees effectively.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and technical drawings.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in the field.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Must be available to respond to emergency situations and outage restoration efforts.

Work Environment

Work is performed in outdoor environments and around energized high-voltage electrical equipment. Employees may be exposed to inclement weather, heights, electrical hazards, and other conditions associated with substation construction and maintenance work. Required personal protective equipment must be worn in accordance with the PWC Safety Manual.
