TITLE: School Bus Mechanic

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduate or equivalent. One year of experience in vehicle maintenance/repair. Must obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with endorsements and drive a bus when called upon to do so.

REPORTS TO: Lead Mechanic or Shop Supervisor

JOB GOAL: To ensure the safe transportation of children and equipment for Cumberland County Schools by repairing and maintaining the operating condition of automotive equipment and driving a bus when called upon to do so.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Diagnoses and performs minor vehicle repairs.
• Performs preventive maintenance procedures in accordance to state guidelines.
• Acquires certifications to perform North Carolina 30-day inspection of vehicles.
• Performs duties of fuel truck driver as needed.
• Obtains and maintains CDL bus license.
• Completes the pre-trip and post-trip inspection.
• Drives a bus when called upon to do so while maintaining proficiency in driving skills.
• Maintains bus route schedule.
• Maintains discipline and reports undisciplined students to school administration.
• Discharges students only at authorized stops and transports only authorized students.
• Complies with local and state traffic regulations and observes all mandatory safety regulations.
• Reports delays and accidents.
• Cleans the interior of the bus.
• Attends and successfully completes all training activities as required to improve ability and knowledge in performance of work duties.
• Serves as team player and role model for other employees in the organization; demonstrates a commitment to continuous quality improvement; supports and exhibits organizational core values of caring, respect, integrity, responsibility, high expectations, being customer driven, and valuing fairness.
• Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to perform heavy lifting exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
• Must be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) when requested.
