POSITION SUMMARY:
This is an hourly position with primary responsibility of providing supplemental tutorial support to eligible Title I private school students in the areas of reading, writing and math. Under the general supervision of the assigned private school administrator with direct supervision from Federal Way Public Schools' Title I office, tutors are assigned to Title I students (Title I Private School Tutors do not provide classroom support).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. Some incumbents may not perform all the duties listed while in other cases related duties may also be assigned. * Supervise and monitor students in accordance with the school and district policies.
* Tutor students one-on-one or in small groups in the areas of reading, writing or math through supplemental tutorial support (and may not perform activities normally performed by classroom assistants or classroom teachers)
* Perform record keeping and clerical functions for the purpose of providing necessary records/materials
* Monitor individuals and/or groups of students in a variety of settings
* Confer with teachers and/or parents as may be required for the purpose of providing input into the evaluation of students' progress and/or implementing/modifying students' objectives
* Provide information, as requested by building or program staff, regarding the specific tutorial activities performed and conducted with assigned students
* Attend functions as assigned (e.g. meetings, in-service presentations, trainings, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions
* Communicate concerns to the principal regarding any violations of safety standards or lack of cooperation on the part of students or drivers.
* Help students problem solve and resolve conflicts.
* Report safety hazards seen on campus to main office so appropriate action can be taken.
* Follow protocol when assisting an injured student.
* Establish an environment that encourages appropriate behavior and redirect student behaviors that are not in line with the school behavior expectations.
* Assist the teacher in the communicating with other building/district staff members and parents.
* Inform the advising teacher to any observed problems or information regarding an individual student.
* Perform instructional/tutorial assignments and keep records as directed by the supervising teacher.
* Interact positively with students, parents, and staff.
* Give positive reinforcement to students throughout the day.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Per Federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Regulations, new hires must have:
* High School Diploma or Equivalent,
* And one of the following:
* AA degree, OR
* 48 College-Level Semester Credits, OR
* 72 College-Level Quarter Credits, OR
* Pass the state approved Para Pro Assessment
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Proficient in basic spelling, math and grammar skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience working with students.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
Pass a criminal background check
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Procedures for the proper regulation of traffic and pedestrians and apply procedures as appropriate
Different learning styles and how to provide support for learning
ABILITY TO:
Practice effective safety and security within individual work routines.
Demonstrate basic knowledge of modern technology and willingness and ability to increase knowledge to proficiency
Be a good listener.
Follow written and verbal directions with minimal supervision
Speak, read and follow written communications in English
Demonstrate enthusiasm, flexibility and a commitment to students
Possess the desire, skill and patience to work with students with special emotional, academic and social needs, which may include violent behavior
Demonstrate a caring attitude and establish an environment that encourages appropriate behavior and successful learning
Exercise judgment as to when to act independently and when to refer to higher authority
Practice ethical and professional standards of conduct including the requirements of confidentiality
Communicate effectively with staff, students, parents/guardians, and the public in a multicultural and multiracial community
