Position: Hazel Wolf K-8 - Special Education Teacher (Resource) - 0.5 FTE

Overview

A special education classroom teacher performs under the general direction of the building principal or program manager and with assistance from appropriate staff personnel. The teacher fosters and enhances an effective learning environment; establishes and adapts learning objectives and standards for special education students based on district guidelines and special education regulations; provides instruction, counseling, discipline, and supervision to meet the individual needs of assigned students;

and evaluates student performance and progress.

Essential Functions
  • 40% – Foster an educational environment conducive to the learning and maturation of assigned special education students; plan an instructional program tailored to individual student needs; prepare individual lesson plans; adapt and modify programs and plans as necessary.
  • 15% – Use instructional methods and materials suited to the students’ well‑being and the nature of learning activities; implement adapted and modified program objectives; attend in‑service training to improve professional growth.
  • 10% – Establish and implement classroom policies and procedures for student behavior and conduct; provide guidance, counseling, and discipline; make referrals for assistance where appropriate.
  • 5% – Confer with students, parents or guardians, specialists, and other staff to maintain open, positive relationships and encourage student achievement.
  • 10% – Establish classroom goals and objectives appropriate to the special education student population; evaluate and record student progress; prepare reports for parents or guardians.
  • 5% – Direct the activities of assigned non‑certificated personnel; attend to physical, emotional, behavioral, medical, or hygienic needs of students as appropriate.
  • 10% – Collect and interpret data; develop, implement, and evaluate Individual Education Plans (IEPs); provide administrative reports; amend documents where appropriate.
  • 5% – Attend required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary by the district or building principal to accomplish the position’s objectives.
Other Functions
  • Serve on staff committees as required.
  • Participate in a variety of activities to enhance personal and professional skills.
  • Perform related tasks consistent with the scope and responsibilities of the position.
  • Attend at least one of two annual Special Education Compliance Professional Development days.
Reporting Relationships

Reports to the building Principal.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of subject areas appropriate to assignment; effective behavior management techniques; effective instructional techniques; and rules and regulations governing special education.
  • Skill in reading, writing, and oral communication; effective communication with parents or guardians in a culturally, racially, and economically diverse community; designing and implementing lesson plans for students with broad achievement ranges; and adapting curricula to meet the intellectual, social, physical, and emotional needs of special education students.
  • Ability to maintain a positive and confident demeanor with students; be fair and consistent with diverse populations; adapt to change; organize activities; manage student behavior; use sound judgment to maintain a safe learning environment; provide instruction; use equipment, computers, tools, or software; direct assistants; administer first aid and CPR; and employ non‑visual or non‑verbal communication methods such as sign language or Braille where appropriate.
Working

Conditions

Required to handle a wide range of student achievement and behavior, including various disabilities, and to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. The position may involve frequent interruptions, exposure to ordinary infectious diseases, bodily fluids, and serious infectious diseases. It may require handling of special equipment, restraining students, and accompanying them outdoors in inclement weather. The teacher may need to avoid or minimize exposure to hazardous materials and maintain stamina for demonstrating instructional techniques safely.
