Para educator – Mainstream Special Education

Position hours: 6.5 hours per day, 178 days per year.
Pay: PSE Salary Schedule Level 5 – $25.40 per hour.

Essential Functions

Instruct students individually or in small groups, provide encouragement, reinforcement, and achievement of objectives set by certificated staff; administer and supervise objective tests.

Communicate with certificated staff concerning individual student progress, adjust methods, and consult for remediation or enrichment.

Assist certificated staff in maintaining records, logs, charts, and other assessment records; correct, score, or grade assignments according to guidelines.

Supervise student behavior in classrooms, playgrounds, halls, lunch, bus areas, and field trips; correct behaviors, maintain discipline, and instruct students on behavioral rules.

Assist students with interpersonal and personal skills mastery.

Establish effective communication with students, staff, parents, and community stakeholders.

Provide physical assistance to handicapped students.

Monitor need for first aid and refer for treatment as appropriate.

Alert district staff to student problems.

Locate, prepare, and modify materials for instructional use; operate office equipment.

Serve on district committees or work teams, model appropriate behavior, and protect confidential information.

Perform related duties consistent with the scope of the position.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to the school principal. Receives guidance from the assigned program administrator, teacher, or program specialist.

Mental and Physical Demands

Mental demands: frequent interruptions, wide range of student behaviors, emotional and physical disabilities; must handle distraught or difficult students.
Physical demands: exposure to infectious diseases, lifting students and special equipment, outdoor supervision in inclement weather, need for first aid, CPR, and hygiene assistance.

Qualifications

Minimum: 18 years of age, high school diploma or equivalent, and one of the following:

Successful completion of ETS Para Pro test or Pearson Paraprofessional assessment.
AA degree or higher.
72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at an accredited institution.
Completion of a registered apprenticeship program offered by Washington State Dept. of Labor & Industries.
Successful completion of The Master Teacher Inc. Para educator Online Training Program.

Must successfully complete the Fundamental Course of Studies (FCS) and the General Para educator Certificate of the state‑mandated program.
Required training:
Right Response Training within 3–5 months of hire, first aid and CPR certification, hepatitis‑B immunization, background check.
Key skills: reading, writing, communication; subject knowledge; behavior management; instructional techniques; computer literacy; organizational ability; ability to work with students with disabilities.
