Third Way is seeking a Senior Policy Advisor, Family Policy to help shape and advance the Economic Program’s family policy agenda. This person will lead the development of policy ideas and research focused on child care, paid family and medical leave, caregiving, federal tax and benefit policies, and other issues affecting working families. As part of that work, this person will develop and advance policy ideas in collaboration with external partners and serve as a representative of Third Way’s family economic security work with government leaders, policy advocates, and other key stakeholders.

As a Senior Policy Advisor, Family Policy
, a typical day might include…

  • Developing new policy ideas and approaches to strengthen the economic security of America’s working families, particularly on child care, paid family and medical leave, caregiving, and federal tax and benefit policy;

  • Conceiving of, then authoring, high-impact memos, reports, and other products that diagnose problems facing working families and advance practical solutions for policymakers;

  • Conducting in-depth research and analysis of federal policies, legislative proposals, economic trends, and emerging challenges affecting families;

  • Leading engagement with Congress to educate policymakers on issues central to the family economic security portfolio, advance our policy ideas, and identify opportunities for bipartisan and center‑left progress on family policy;

  • Building and managing relationships with key external partners, including advocates, researchers, industry leaders, employers, and other organizations, to inform and advance Third Way’s family economic security agenda;

  • Representing Third Way externally in briefings, convenings, coalitions, conferences, and media engagements as an expert on family policy;

  • Working with other members of Third Way’s economic, communications, and outreach teams to develop strategies for effectively communicating and advancing the Economic Program’s family economic security work;

  • Identifying emerging policy and political opportunities where Third Way can develop distinctive ideas, shape debates, and make tangible progress for families;

  • Performing other duties as assigned.

    Salary Range
    : $84,000 - $95,000, annually

  • An interest in center-left politics and commitment to Third Way’s mission;

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant field, with an advanced degree or substantial relevant professional experience preferred;

  • A minimum of 3‑5 years of experience working in economic policy or other related fields;

  • A sophisticated understanding of federal family policy and politics as well as a passion for helping American families achieve economic security;

  • A demonstrated ability to write clearly on complex topics for an audience of non-experts;

  • Proficiency and experience using an array of tools to advocate for a cause and achieve demonstrated results on the Hill, in the press, on political campaigns, and/or in the Administration.

  • Strong oral advocacy skills including experience with presentations, briefings, and press engagement;
