South King Fire & Rescue is a fire department serving the communities of Federal Way, Des Moines, and portions of unincorporated King County, Washington. The district covers nearly 41 square miles and provides fire protection, emergency medical services, and rescue operations for approximately 150,000 residents. The department responds to about 16,000 calls for service each year, reflecting a high level of community need and operational activity.

Team members work in a collaborative environment focused on public safety, rapid response, and professional service to the community.

This is a full-time, on-site Firefighter role located in Federal Way, WA. The Firefighter is responsible for responding to fire, medical, rescue, and hazardous materials emergencies, operating firefighting and lifesaving equipment, and performing fire suppression and search-and-rescue activities. Daily duties include conducting safety inspections, maintaining apparatus and station equipment, participating in training drills, and following established protocols to ensure readiness for emergency response.

The role also involves providing emergency medical care within scope of certification, engaging in public education and community outreach, and completing required reports and documentation. Firefighters work as part of a team, adhering to safety standards and departmental policies in a dynamic and physically demanding environment.

• Ability to perform emergency response duties, including fire suppression, search and rescue, and basic hazardous materials awareness.
• Strong physical fitness, stamina, and the ability to safely use firefighting tools, ladders, hoses, and protective equipment.
• Effective teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to follow instructions and coordinate with other emergency personnel.
• Solid judgment and problem-solving skills under pressure, including situational awareness and adherence to safety procedures.
• Basic emergency medical care skills; EMT certification or higher level of medical training is highly beneficial.
• Commitment to ongoing training, professional development, and compliance with departmental policies and state regulations.
• High school diploma or equivalent; additional coursework or certification in fire science or related fields is a plus.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to meet driving and background requirements established by the department.
