POSITION SUMMARYResponsible for supporting health care needs of students by performance of medical duties ordered by physician, which are developed and directed by the ESA School Nurse. Responsible for maintaining health records on all students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. - Monitor specified medical/health care needs of students with special medical needs, and instruct students to the maximum ability of their independence.
- Administer student medications and medical procedures as directed and requested by physicians.
- Administer first aid, per guidelines of Federal Way Public Schools, American Red Cross, and Department of Health (multi-colored flip chart) within scope of licensure.
- Maintain records under the guidelines established by the ESA School Nurse and Federal Way Public Schools.
- Assist with health screening; maintaining information log; recording results of screenings.
- Maintain confidentiality or provide medical information regarding students according to law and professional ethics guidelines.
- Will be assigned additional nursing duties as appropriate under the Nurse Practice Act and relevant WAC's.
- Serve as member of school health team of the District.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience
- Must have completed an educational program required by Washington State Registered Nurse licensure guidelines
- Washington State RN or LPN license
- Work scheduled hours on a consistent basis
- Experience with children with special health care needs and diverse populations
- Criminal background clearance
- Washington State RN or LPN License maintained and renewed yearly
- CPR/First Aid Certification through either American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- School board policies and procedures
- Neurological/seizure protocol.
- Basic proficiency of standard computer software applications
- Perform endotracheal or tracheostomy suctioning.
- Medication administration and documentation.
- Provide respiratory treatment and medication.
- Provide gastrostomy, colostomy, catheterization protocol and procedures.
- Provide blood glucose monitoring.
- Provide care for individuals with special needs and their care providers in a warm and confident manner.
- Establish and maintain effective communications and working relationships with health care professionals and school staff.
- Organize and perform job responsibilities efficiently and independently without close supervision and able to pay strict attention to detail
- Speak, read and follow written or verbal communications
- Practice effective safety and security within individual work routines
- Develop and maintain positive customer relations with staff and service providers
- Work collaboratively with District staff and promote teamwork with co-workers
- Practice ethical and professional standards of conduct including the requirements of confidentiality
- Relate effectively with parents, staff, students and the public in a multicultural and multiracial community

The employee in this position is required to constantly talk/hear/see, and reach out in front to direct and assist students and handle/grasp throughout their shift up to 50 lbs. The employee is required to frequently sit and walk, bend/stoop, squat/kneel, and use fine finger manipulations. The employee will occasionally be required to stand, lift, carry, twist torso and neck. This position rarely requires climbing/balancing or lifting bench to shoulder or overhead.
