Position Summary
Middle school assistant coaches oversee the growth and development of student athletes by focusing on fundamental skills instruction with an emphasis on whole‑child development to include expectations for academic and athletic excellence, leadership skills, and positive social relationships. Assistant coaches must be at least 19 years old (21 for head coaches).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Professional Development: stay current with sport‑specific literature, attend clinics and workshops.
- Rules & Regulations: study and apply the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), Federal Way Public Schools, league rules, and eligibility requirements.
- Program Promotion: promote the sport within the school and encourage student participation.
- Practice Organization: hold daily practice; absence must be cleared in advance by the building athletic director.
- Standard of Care: demonstrate safety training, perform basic taping and first‑aid functions.
- Professionalism & Ethics: exercise good judgment, model sportsmanship, humility, and ethical behavior.
- Supervision: be responsible for participants from arrival to departure.
- Accident/Injury Procedure: call 911 for serious injuries, complete accident report within 24 hours.
- Meeting Attendance: attend building, district, and league meetings.
- Equipment & Facility: report safety concerns, manage program equipment and inventory.
- Fundraising & Purchases: request essential items through the head coach; do not use personal funds.
- Program Leader: meet with head coach to develop program goals and ensure consistent instruction of skills and strategies.
- Other duties: perform related tasks that support efficient functioning of the athletics unit and student learning objectives.
- High‑school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of sport‑specific playing and/or coaching experience.
- Proven training in presentation of drills, safety, and skill application.
- Ability to speak, read, and follow written or verbal communications.
- Knowledge of WIAA rules, NFHS regulations, record‑keeping, and school board policies.
- Capacity to organize, administer, and oversee a sport‑specific program independently.
- Compliance with school board policies; current district‑approved CPR/First Aid card.
- 21 years of age or older; criminal background clearance.
- Completion of an online concussion training course (link: ).
- Consistent, scheduled working hours.
- Completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course (passing the test).
- Experience:
three or more years of paid middle‑school or post‑secondary sport‑specific coaching.
- Minimum age: 21 years.
- Background check clearance.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification.
- Online Concussion Training completion.
Organize and administer a sport‑specific program; comply with policies; perform jobs efficiently without close supervision; maintain detailed records; practice effective safety; develop positive relationships with staff, parents, and students; promote teamwork and cultural competence; meet physical demands (walking, lifting up to 25 lbs).
