Position Summary

Middle school assistant coaches oversee the growth and development of student athletes by focusing on fundamental skills instruction with an emphasis on whole child development to include expectations for academic and athletic excellence, leadership skills, and positive social relationships.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Professional Development and Leadership. The assistant coach stays current with sport-specific literature and attends clinics and workshops.
  • Rules and Regulations. The assistant coach studies and understands the rules of the sport, WIAA, Federal Way Public Schools, and the league in which the team competes.
  • Program Promotion. Promote the sport within the school and encourage student participation.
  • Program Organization. Hold daily practices; absences for illness or emergencies only and cleared in advance by the building athletic director.
  • Standard of Care. Model safety training; maintain working knowledge of basic athletic training, including basic taping and first aid.
  • Professionalism. Exercise good judgment, promote positive coaching behaviors, foster leadership and teamwork, and maintain an even-keel, calm, fair-minded approach.
  • Sportsmanship and Ethics. Model ethical behavior, humility, and good citizenship at all times.
  • Supervision. Responsible for program participants from report to departure.
  • Rules and Eligibility. Understand and reinforce district eligibility and participation rules as directed by the head coach.
  • Eligibility Process. Ensure participants complete the eligibility process before practice participation.
  • Accident/Injury Procedure. Call 911 for serious injuries; file Accident Report Form within 24 hours; report emergencies immediately to appropriate athletic staff.
  • Meetings. Attend building, district, and league meetings.
  • Facilities and Equipment. Report safety concerns and care for equipment and facilities.
  • Violations and Ejections. Report incidents to head coach and athletic directors after the contest.
  • Evaluation. Attend an evaluation meeting with the building athletic director after the season.
  • Program Leadership. Meet with the head coach prior to the season to set goals and ensure consistent instruction of skills and strategies.
  • Equipment, Supplies, and Inventory. Account for program equipment and supplies from the start of the season.
  • Purchases and Fundraising. Request program needs through the head coach; do not purchase with personal funds; coordinate fundraising with the head coach and obtain prior approval from the building athletic director.
  • Other Duties. Perform other related duties as assigned to support student learning objectives.
Required Qualifications
  • Education and Experience. High school diploma or equivalent; one year of sport-specific playing and/or coaching experience in secondary or post-secondary athletics or related club coaching; proven training in drills, safety, and skill application.
  • Additional Requirements. Consistent work hours.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three or more years of paid middle or high school and/or post-secondary sport-specific coaching experience or related club coaching experience.
  • Completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course (including passing the test).
Conditions of Employment
