Job Description
WRS has immediate openings for experienced and competent Asphalt Paving Laborer / Roller Operators. Our paving crews work most of the year and typically get over 2,000 hours annually. This position supports all aspects of asphalt paving operations while also safely and effectively operating asphalt rollers to achieve proper compaction and a high-quality finished surface.
Responsibilities- Rakes and shovels asphalt to achieve smooth, even surfaces.
- Assists with job site setup, breakdown, and traffic control.
- Uses hand and power tools safely and efficiently.
- Acts as a spotter for trucks and moving equipment.
- Marks utilities and paving boundaries.
- Applies tack coat as directed.
- Keeps the job site clean, safe and organized.
- Works closely with the paving crew to ensure quality workmanship.
- Safely operates rollers of various sizes (approximately 1-15 tons).
- Performs Breakdown, Intermediate, and Finish rolling to meet compaction specifications.
- Monitors mat and mix temperatures and adjusts rolling patterns based on conditions.
- Eliminates roller marks, prevents segregation, and ensures a smooth finished surface.
- Coordinates with the paver operator, ground crew, and truck drivers for efficient workflow.
- Maintains proper rolling speed and direction to avoid asphalt displacement.
- Reports mechanical issues or maintenance needs promptly.
- Daily inspections and routine maintenance including fueling, greasing and cleaning.
- CDL Class A Preferred
- Prior asphalt paving experience preferred (laborer and/or roller experience)
- Roller operation experience strongly preferred; willingness to train the right candidate.
- Knowledge of safe operation around heavy equipment.
- Physically capable of performing demanding manual labor in varying weather conditions.
- Strong work ethic, positive attitude, and desire to learn.
- Ability to work long days, weekends, and extended periods during the paving season.
- Ability to earn and maintain the respect of coworkers, leadership, and customers.
