Process Operator (Assistant Operator), Ferndale Refinery
The Process Operator (Assistant Operator) will work independently and with other personnel to maintain and operate equipment and processes at Ferndale Refinery. The role involves handling hazardous, volatile materials under high temperature and pressure, managing safety protocols, and ensuring the assigned processing unit operates safely and at specified production rates.
Responsibilities- Demonstrate awareness and commitment to safety.
- Maintain equipment and operations.
- Take samples and readings of various process streams.
- Operate unit consoles.
- Monitor and observe the assigned area for abnormal conditions and emergency situations.
- Work with outside contractors and agencies.
- Participate in safety reviews and training refreshers.
- Follow safety processes and procedures.
- Initiate work orders and permitting related to the assigned unit.
- Serve on the emergency response fire brigade and perform firefighting duties.
- Complete assigned training and uphold company values.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States.
- 18 years of age or older.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Possess or be able to qualify for a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
- Willing to comply with rotating shift schedules, overtime, reading technical procedures in English, learning process operation software, working in enclosed and confined spaces, handling chemicals, wearing fire‑retardant clothing and PPE, maintaining respirator fit, operating with petroleum under high pressure and heat, climbing up to 200 feet, lifting up to 50 pounds, performing firefighting duties, and working outdoors in harsh weather.
- At least 1 year of direct experience as a process operator in a refinery, chemical plant, power plant, nuclear plant, wastewater treatment plant, or other industrial manufacturing facility.
- Completion of an Associate’s Degree or higher in Process Technology from an accredited institution by hiring date.
- Record of formal emergency response training within the past 24 months.
The starting hourly pay rate for this position is $40.94 per hour, with future pay changes determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Relocation assistance is not available.

LocationFerndale Refinery is located on Puget Sound in Ferndale, Washington, approximately 20 miles south of the U.S.
-Canada border. The facility includes crude distillation, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, and hydrodesulfurization units, and processes a variety of crude oils and fuels.
