The City of Fernie Business Analyst I

Asset Management Full-Time, Temporary; 2-Year Contract Term September 10, 2026

The City of Fernie is inviting applications for the position of Business Analyst I, full-time, temporary 2 Year Contract Term.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Business Systems Manager, the Business Analyst I is responsible for supporting the planning, coordination, and implementation of business transformation initiatives that improve service delivery, organizational effectiveness, and decision-making across the organization. The Business Analyst I supports the delivery of Council-approved and corporate priority initiatives that improve service delivery, business processes, organizational effectiveness, information management, and decision-making across the organization.

Working collaboratively with departments, the Business Analyst I helps identify business needs, define requirements, evaluate opportunities for improvement, and support the implementation of systems, processes, and technology-enabled solutions. The position applies business analysis, project coordination, change management, and data-informed decision-making practices to support the successful delivery of priority initiatives aligned with the City's strategic objectives. The position exercises independent judgment in the analysis of business issues, development of recommendations, and coordination of projects and initiatives.

The Business Analyst I is not responsible for operational oversight of business systems, vendor management, or staff supervision.

Duties and Responsibilities

Business Analysis and Process Improvement

  • Work collaboratively with departments to understand business needs, operational challenges, and opportunities for improvement associated with approved organizational priorities and initiatives.
  • Conduct business analysis activities including stakeholder engagement, requirements gathering, process mapping, workflow analysis, and development of business recommendations.
  • Evaluate current business processes and support the design of future-state processes, procedures, and service delivery approaches.
  • Facilitate workshops, meetings, and discussions to support requirements definition, business process improvement, organizational alignment, and decision-making.
  • Assist in the development of business cases, project charters, implementation plans, and other documentation required to evaluate, advance, and implement approved initiatives.
  • Support departments in identifying opportunities to improve information management, data quality, business processes, and organizational effectiveness.

Project Delivery and Change Management

  • Coordinate the planning and implementation of approved business transformation, process improvement, and technology-enabled initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain project plans, schedules, risk registers, issue logs, and project documentation to support successful project delivery.
  • Coordinate project activities with departments, vendors, consultants, and other stakeholders to support implementation objectives.
  • Support procurement, implementation, testing, configuration, training, and transition activities associated with new systems and business improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor project progress and prepare status updates, reports, and recommendations for project sponsors and leadership.
  • Support organizational change management activities including stakeholder engagement, communication planning, training coordination, adoption support, and transition planning.
  • Support the implementation of approved roadmaps, workplans, and organizational priorities by coordinating project activities, tracking progress, and identifying risks, issues, and dependencies requiring management attention.
