Position:
Special Education Teacher – Strategies Program

Location: East Valley Elementary (August 2026).
Salary: $50,761‑$92,279 annually, employer‑paid retirement; depends on experience.

Position Summary

The special education teacher establishes goal‑oriented teaching strategies that benefit students with disabilities. The teacher works under the direct supervision of the school administrator and is evaluated accordingly.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Follows mandated compliance standards established by federal, state, or district regulations.
  • Utilizes district curriculum guides, standardized tests, and special‑education teacher‑prepared criterion‑referenced test results to meet individual needs.
  • Evaluates goals and modified plans when necessary.
  • Develops and executes appropriate lesson strategies that guide instruction daily to accomplish long‑range goals.
  • Develops organized plans that assist a substitute special‑education teacher with class lists, inclusion/resource schedules, seating charts, materials, and lesson plans.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and application of concepts, processes, and facts necessary to implement IEP goals and objectives properly.
  • Recognizes the relationship of the program with other disciplines and stresses interrelationships while teaching.
  • Plans for and participates in professional improvement activities; takes advantage of courses, readings, in‑service training, and conferences in the area of specialization.
  • Gives written and oral directions that are clear, concise, and appropriate, or modifies them so students can benefit from the general education curriculum.
  • Guides the learning process toward IEP goals by establishing clear objectives and implementing the criteria described in these objectives.
  • Remains aware of and utilizes appropriate questioning strategies that enhance student participation, success, and development of thinking skills.
  • Develops and/or utilizes data about student needs and progress. Reports this data to parents consistently.
  • Assesses individual student needs and provides learning activities that are appropriate and sufficiently varied to meet each student’s learning style.
  • Utilizes individual student interests and aptitudes to promote a desire to learn.
  • Assigns and monitors homework when appropriate, as an extension and reinforcement of classroom learning.
  • Informs students of their progress through assessments such as grading, evaluation, and testing in a timely manner.
  • Recognizes encouragement and positive reinforcement techniques as effective motivational factors.
  • Provides learning experiences that encourage students to assume responsibility for self‑direction.
  • Uses bulletin boards, displays, interest centers, and other motivational materials to promote learning without creating an overstimulating environment.
  • Demonstrates acceptable command of the English language in written and oral communication.
  • Establishes clear limits of behavior; students know the consequences of exceeding limits. The teacher defers to individual behavior plans to guide students toward appropriate behavior.
  • Promotes self‑discipline by monitoring expected behavior and using appropriate responses (shouting, sarcasm, and belittling are not acceptable).
  • Helps students improve self‑image by focusing on strengths and discouraging persistent focus on weaknesses.
  • Creates an atmosphere where students feel cared for in their learning.
  • Promotes purposeful activity and reasonable interaction among students while ensuring individualized instruction is not adversely affected.
  • Encourages respect for student rights, opinions, and contributions of others.
  • Performs clerical duties such as attendance, budgeting of materials, and recording grades promptly and accurately.
  • Communicates with parents to foster constructive relationships and provide awareness of student progress and rights.
  • Promotes a professional attitude toward the schools, school board, administration, staff, and community.
  • Works effectively with staff to achieve student success within an inclusionary model involving frequent communication, shared lesson planning, and shared responsibility for instruction.
