Job SummaryThe NLR Data Engineering Group is seeking a graduate intern to serve as a curator for the Geothermal Data Repository (GDR), and support other related domain‑specific data repositories. The role involves curating individual data submissions, advising researchers and scientists on better organizing their project data, and ensuring metadata quality and consistency. The intern will review metadata for accuracy, completeness and relevance, organize disparate submissions, adopt and implement emerging data standards, and add supplemental information to support DOE data categorization.
When necessary, the intern will contact submitters directly to resolve any discrepancies or omissions. The intern may also support geothermal or other energy research projects through data organization, analysis support, or documentation.
- Curate geothermal datasets for metadata completeness, accuracy, and alignment with repository standards
- Apply data standards and identify gaps or inconsistencies in submissions
- Coordinate with data submitters to resolve issues and improve data quality and usability
- Occasionally support geothermal research, including data management, model support, and literature review
- Minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0
- Undergraduate:
Enrolled full‑time in a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited institution - Post‑undergraduate:
Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months; eligible for up to one year internship - Graduate:
Enrolled full‑time in a master’s degree program at an accredited institution - Post‑graduate:
Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months; eligible for up to one year internship - Graduate + PhD:
Completed master’s degree and enrolled as a PhD candidate at an accredited institution - Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date
Required Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a graduate program in geoscience, engineering, data science, or related field
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated attention to detail and organizational ability
- Ability to work independently and manage open‑ended tasks
- Interest in data management, curation, or scientific data workflows
- Experience with datasets related to geothermal energy systems or other energy technologies, including geophysical, geological, geochemical, and geospatial data
- Experience with marine hydro kinetics, including computational fluid dynamics, mechanical engineering, wave and current monitoring, structural testing, or MHK converters
- Experience with other renewable and alternative energy systems such as solar, biofuel, hydrogen, building science, chemistry, grid modernization, or wind power
- Coding experience in Python
- Customer service experience
- Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills
