Utilizes the nursing process to provide patient care. Maintains professional accountability for provision of patient care for the assigned patients. Evaluates the overall effectiveness of care provided by other direct care givers. Coordinates the patient care in conjunction with other departments.
The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is a high‑acuity, fast‑paced recovery environment dedicated to delivering safe, efficient, and compassionate care to patients emerging from anesthesia following surgical, interventional, and diagnostic procedures. As an essential member of the perioperative team, the PACU Registered Nurse plays a critical role in ensuring safe recovery, effective symptom management, and an exceptional patient experience during the most vulnerable phases of postoperative care.
Responsibilities- Perform rapid, comprehensive patient assessment upon arrival from the operating or procedure room.
- Vigilantly monitor airway stability, hemodynamics, neurological status, pain control, and potential post‑anesthesia complications.
- Anticipate patient needs, collaborate closely with anesthesia providers and surgeons, and provide continuous, focused support to ensure a smooth transition from anesthesia to Phase I or Phase II recovery.
- Manage airway support, titrate medications, address nausea and pain, educate patients and families, and prepare individuals for discharge or transfer to inpatient care.
- Graduated from a school of nursing (Associate's Degree, Diploma, or BSN).
- Is personally responsible for obtaining, and maintaining, a current RN license within the hiring state and/or compact licensure in which nursing duties are performed and must meet all state board of nursing requirements.
