Position Description
Under the general direction of the Assistant Parks, Recreation, and Aquatics Director, the Camp Counselor is responsible for supervising groups of children and providing a safe, fun, and engaging atmosphere for all participants of Camp Fife. Campers are divided into two age groups:
Pathfinders (ages 6-9) and Voyagers (ages 10-12), requiring counselors to tailor activities and supervision based on the developmental needs of each group.
This position requires flexibility, as hours are on a fixed schedule but may vary depending on program needs. Camp Fife operates Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with typical hours ranging from 30 to 40 hours per week. A mandatory week‑long training is required before the camp season begins. Anticipated position duration:
June 8 – August 28, 2026. Reports directly to the Recreation Manager.
- Lead and supervise activities such as crafts, games, and sports tailored to Pathfinders and/or Voyagers, encouraging participation and creativity.
- Foster a positive environment that promotes teamwork, learning, and growth among campers.
- Communicate effectively with participants, staff, and parents, providing feedback and updates as needed.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records, including accident reports, daily logs, and attendance.
- Ensure the safety and well‑being of all campers, adhering to program guidelines and policies.
- Assist in light maintenance and cleanup of camp facilities and activity areas.
- Participate in and contribute to pre‑camp training and ongoing staff meetings.
- Respond calmly and appropriately to emergencies or behavioral issues, utilizing effective conflict‑resolution strategies.
- Actively supervise and engage with campers in the water during visits to the Fife Aquatic Center to promote safety and provide guidance. Counselors are required to wear the designated Fife‑branded swimwear provided by the camp.
- OPTIONAL:
Drive a 15‑passenger shuttle‑style van to transport campers to field trips and other program locations (for qualified staff). - Perform minor maintenance and custodial duties as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support camp operations.

- Interact effectively and professionally with a wide variety of participants and staff from diverse socio‑economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds
- Respond calmly and appropriately to emergencies
- Explain and enforce facility and program guidelines, policies, and procedures
- Maintain a professional appearance and wear program uniform as required
- Show up with an enthusiastic and positive attitude
- Lead activities in art, sports and games for youth (ages 6 to 12)
- Demonstrate effective problem‑solving skills with City staff, general public, program participants and parents/guardians
- Communicate with the ability to understand and give verbal and written instructions in the English language
- At least one year of working with children ages 6–12
- Must be at least 17 years of age at the time of hire; 18 years or older to qualify for driving.
- Valid CPR/First Aid/AED certification or the ability to acquire during the week of training
- Must be able to read, write and speak the English language.
- Possession and maintenance of current Washington State Driver’s License with good driving record.
- Ability to drive a vehicle including a 15‑passenger shuttle van and maintain an acceptable driving record per city guidelines (must be 18 years of age to drive city vehicles).
- Indoor and outdoor work environments, often in a variety of weather conditions.
- Fast‑paced, with frequent interruptions and varied responsibilities.
- Ability to carry up to 40 pounds.
- Bending, kneeling, and crouching to assist campers with activities.
