Freight Handler - Dock to Driver

Position Summary

Lynden Transport is hiring for its Dock to Driver Training Program designed to pay for CDL training for employees who wish to obtain a Class A CDL. Successful candidates will be hired as Freight Operations and will receive dock/yard training. The Service Center Manager will determine if the employee is a good candidate for the training program.

• Receives, loads, stores and distributes freight as directed, using forklifts or other equipment.
• Loads and unloads trailers with or without mechanical freight‑handling equipment.
• Ensures load security using various cargo straps, tarps, ropes, lumber and other tools, including securement of flatbeds and vans.
• Performs lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying of freight.
• Loads or unloads materials onto or off pallets, skids, or lifting devices such as forklifts.
• Positions forks, lifting platforms, or other devices under, over, or around loaded pallets, skids, boxes, products, or materials or hooks tow trucks to trailer hitches, and transports load to a designated area.
• Unloads and stacks material by raising and lowering lifting devices.
• Moves levers and presses pedals to drive truck and control lifting apparatus.
• Counts, inspects, and checks markings on shipments per bill of lading or other documents.
• Weighs materials or products and records weight on tags, labels, or in computer systems.
• Enters information into company computer systems using keypunching, scanning, or other electronic processes.
• Makes inquiries from computer systems.
• Operates other simple business machines and maintains detailed business records.
• Reports safety hazards, on‑job injuries, or equipment/cargo accidents immediately to the on‑duty supervisor.
• Depends on reliable attendance.

• High school diploma or GED.
• Must be at least 21 years of age with a good driving record.
• Willing to work in the warehouse and yard with minimal driving time to start.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as hazardous materials shipping regulations, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to present information and respond to questions from managers, customers and the public.
• Ability to apply common sense in written, oral, or diagram instructions.
• Ability to handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
• Mathematical skills: ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure; conduct telephone communication.
• Reasoning: application of common sense to carry out instructions and deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
• Ability to work with others.
• Must pass a pre‑employment drug test and background check.

• Lift up to 75 lbs.
• Sit, stand or walk for extended periods.
• Reach overhead.
• Finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls for extended periods.
• Stooped, kneel, crawl, crouch, or crawl to examine equipment and cargo.
• Install and remove 60‑pound tire chains as required by weather conditions.
• Push or pull freight up to 4,000 lbs. with a pallet jack.
• Reposition (push or pull) a 3,500‑pound dolly on uneven surfaces while hooking a trailer set of trailers.

The employee normally works outdoors in various weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts, and may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles and vibration. The noise level is usually moderate.
