Position: General Accountant (Non-Profit)

Overview

The Ilitch Companies Foundation and Little Caesars AAA Hockey Club are seeking an accountant to join our not‑for‑profit team. The accountant will manage day‑to‑day financial activities and ensure accurate financial reporting. Duties include processing daily transactions, performing month‑end close procedures, and preparing monthly financial statements. The role collaborates with cross‑functional teams and supports special projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Record and reconcile daily financial transactions, including accounts payable, cash receipts, and accounts receivable; build positive relationships with vendors and team managers.
  • Enter and verify payment of invoices for accounts payable, ensuring payments are charged to the correct accounts.
  • Determine outstanding accounts receivable balances, collect, and perform accounts receivable functions.
  • Prepare balance‑sheet reconciliations and adjusting journal entries as part of the month‑end close process.
  • Prepare financial statements for month‑end closing.
  • Aid with budget to actual variance analysis and prepare commentary on financial statements.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to address accounting‑related inquiries and provide support for decision‑making needs.
  • Ensure compliance with internal control policies and procedures to mitigate financial risks and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain accurate, organized financial records and documentation for reference and compliance purposes.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Work with the Accounting team to provide a clean and timely year‑end reporting package to the tax department.
  • Collaborate with department heads for the creation of annual budgets and continuous projections.
  • Work in partnership with internal and external auditors to facilitate audit requests.
  • Assist with various financial special projects as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant complex accounting standards, laws, and regulations.
Required Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • Minimum three (3) years of accounting experience with progressive responsibility in a nonprofit setting.
  • Strong accounting skills and in‑depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and their application to business.
  • Highly developed verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Ability to manage several complex projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment with all levels of colleagues.
  • Proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.
  • Detail‑oriented mindset with focus on accuracy and precision in financial reporting.
  • Strong computer skills; ability to navigate and utilize computer programs and applications essential to job duties.
  • Experience with Oracle is a plus.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with the highest ethical standards and integrity.
Preferred Knowledge,

  • Experience with Oracle.
