Position: Middle School Band / General Music Teacher

Position Summary

The Middle School Band and General Music Teacher is responsible for delivering a comprehensive music education program that fosters student creativity, musical skill development, and appreciation for diverse musical genres. This position includes instruction in instrumental music, general music concepts, and performance opportunities, while supporting the overall academic and social development of students in grades 6-8. The teacher collaborates with colleagues to enhance the school’s arts program and contributes to a positive, inclusive learning environment.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver engaging, standards-based instruction in band and general music.
  • Teach instrumental techniques, music theory, music history, and performance skills appropriate to middle school learners.
  • Direct and manage band ensembles and organize performances, concerts, festivals, and school events.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs, abilities, and interests of students.
  • Assess student learning and provide timely, constructive feedback.
  • Maintain an organized, safe, and respectful classroom environment.
  • Integrate technology and multimedia resources into music instruction where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with other teachers, staff, and administration to support school initiatives and interdisciplinary learning.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and guardians regarding progress and expectations.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and school-related activities.
  • Manage inventory, care, and maintenance of musical instruments, equipment, uniforms, and materials.
  • Assist students with instrument selection, care, and basic maintenance.
  • Support extracurricular music opportunities when applicable.
  • Collaborate with district music staff to support vertical alignment and student transition into high school instrumental programs.
  • Assist with and support the high school band and marching band program, including collaboration on performances, events, student transition, and program continuity across grade levels.
Qualifications

Required

Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or related field.

Valid state teaching license/certification in Music (appropriate for middle school level).

Demonstrated knowledge of instrumental pedagogy and general music instruction.

Strong classroom management and organizational skills.

Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in Music Education or related field.
  • Experience teaching middle school band and general music.
  • Experience directing concert bands or instrumental ensembles.
  • Familiarity with educational technology and digital music tools.
  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency on brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments.
  • Experience or interest in supporting extracurricular music opportunities, including marching band, jazz band, pep band, or show choir band.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to stand and move around the classroom for extended periods.
  • Ability to conduct and demonstrate musical techniques.
  • Ability to lift and move musical equipment and materials (up to 25-30 lbs).
  • Fine motor skills for instrument demonstration and use of technology.
  • Adequate hearing ability to assess musical performance and balance.
Working Conditions
  • School-based setting including classrooms, rehearsal spaces, auditoriums, and performance venues.
  • Regular school hours with occasional evening or weekend events (e.g., concerts, performances, festivals).
  • Interaction with students, staff, parents, and community members.
  • Moderate to high noise levels typical of music classrooms and rehearsals.
  • Fast-paced environment requiring flexibility and adaptability.
