Responsibilities

As a Chemical Engineer at a Marathon refinery, you will become familiar with process equipment fundamentals and best practices, build critical thinking skills, and learn how all engineering disciplines work together as a cohesive team. You will gain knowledge of various aspects of a refinery by working with professionals who run specific portions of the refining process. You may work on multiple areas of the refinery, giving you a broad understanding of how the plant operates.

You will also expand your written and verbal presentation skills in a professional work environment.

Process / Technical Service Engineers

May work on a variety of projects in the Technical Services Department with your mentor, putting classroom knowledge into practice. The experience will expand your understanding of the refining environment and the technical aspects of the refinery.

  • Develop and lead test runs to optimize refinery operations
  • Perform process engineering calculations concerning the various processes and equipment in the refinery
  • Monitor and recommend improvements for catalysts and adsorbents
  • Complete projects and recommend improvements to the refinery process and equipment
Operations Research Engineers

Help develop planning, blending, scheduling, and process models for refinery engineers. These models optimize crude oil purchasing, refinery production, blending, finished‑product scheduling, and overall refinery performance.

  • Validate production data and perform mass balancing
  • Perform process modeling
  • Develop graphical interfaces for refinery process units
Environmental Engineers

Work on compliance projects and gain exposure to the environmental laws applicable to refineries.

  • Perform process calculations for the Risk Management Plan
  • Conduct physical surveys of refinery process units
  • Work on projects within the Wastewater Treatment Plant
  • Participate in inspections and testing mandated by federal, state, or local officials
Products Control / Economics Engineers

Work on operations, blending, and refinery economics, understanding tank farm operations and propelling gasoline and other product shipping.

  • Analyze refinery process flow data and compare to recommended optimum levels
  • Update gasoline blend information and tank samples in preparation for annual blender waiver audits
  • Develop applications to present process data for refinery operating decisions
Qualifications
  • Candidates must be majoring in Chemical Engineering
  • Strong academic performance
  • Must be authorized to work in the US on a full‑time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future
  • Positions are available spring, summer, and fall semesters
  • Availability for multiple work terms is preferred
  • A valid driver's license is required
  • Concurrent enrollment in a degree‑seeking program
  • Military experience is a plus
  • Minimum pay: $32.92 – 41.67 max
