Hancock Structural Steel is growing and looking for a skilled Band Saw / Beam Drill Line Operator to join our 1st shift team. If you take pride in your workmanship, enjoy working with your hands, and want to be part of building structures that stand for decades, we want to hear from you.
In this role, you are responsible for the safe and accurate operation of structural steel cutting and drilling equipment in a fabrication shop environment. This position plays a critical role in the preparation of structural steel members — including beams, columns, channels, angles, and plates — according to engineering drawings, shop tickets, and production schedules. The operator ensures that all cuts and drilled holes meet specified tolerances and quality standards while maintaining a clean, safe, and productive work area.
Equipment Operation:- Set up, operate, and maintain structural steel band saws (horizontal/vertical) and CNC or manual beam drill lines
- Read and interpret fabrication drawings, shop tickets, and cut lists to determine cut lengths, hole locations, sizes, and patterns
- Program or input dimensions into CNC drill line controls as required
- Perform layout and marking of steel members prior to cutting or drilling
- Make precise cuts to length, angle, and cope as indicated on shop drawings
- Drill, punch, or ream bolt holes in structural members to specified locations and diameters per AISC and project tolerances
- Inspect completed work using measuring tapes, squares, calipers, and other layout tools to verify dimensional accuracy
- Stage and position raw steel materials for efficient processing using overhead cranes, forklifts, or material handling equipment
- Mark and tag completed pieces for identification and traceability
- Organize and transfer finished pieces to the next fabrication operation or staging area
- Coordinate with other shop personnel to maintain production flow and meet schedule requirements
- Inspect all work for conformance to drawing dimensions, tolerances, and quality standards before releasing to the next operation
- Identify and report non-conforming material to the foreman and assist with disposition
- Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and shop-specific procedures
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times, including safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toed boots, and gloves
- Perform daily pre-operation inspections and basic preventive maintenance on assigned equipment; report deficiencies immediately
- Maintain a clean and organized work area; participate in 5S/housekeeping initiatives
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Preferred 1–2 years of experience operating band saws, beam drill lines, or similar fabrication equipment in a structural steel or heavy manufacturing environment
- Vocational or technical training in metal fabrication, welding, or machining a plus
- Ability to read and interpret structural steel shop drawings, fabrication tickets, and bill of materials
- Working knowledge of steel member designations (W, S, C, L, HSS, plate, etc.) and standard structural shapes
- Proficiency with measuring tools including tape measures, squares, calipers, and levels
- Basic math skills, including fractions, decimals, and conversions (feet/inches)
- Familiarity with CNC control operation and basic programming is preferred
- Knowledge of AISC fabrication tolerances and standard bolt hole requirements a plus
- Forklift and/or overhead crane certification preferred (or willingness to obtain upon hire)
- Valid driver's license may be required
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and crouch for extended periods throughout an 8–10 hour shift
- Regularly lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 lbs.; occasionally assist with heavier lifts using mechanical aids
- Use of hands and fingers to operate machinery controls, measuring instruments, and hand tools
- Ability to read measuring devices accurately in variable shop lighting conditions
