General

Summary:

Hancock Structural Steel, LLC is seeking a Painter / Laborer to join our shop operations team. This position is responsible for preparing surfaces, mixing paints and coatings for a variety of applications, with spray equipment to provide corrosion protection on structural steel and other metal fabrications. The Painter / Laborer also supports the broader shop team with general labor duties including material handling, deliveries, and assisting steel fabricators as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Painting & Surface Preparation:

  • Prepare steel and metal surfaces for painting
  • Apply primers to structural steel members and fabricated assemblies using spray equipment

General Labor & Shop Support:

  • Read and interpret blueprints, shop tickets, and work instructions to determine painting scope, coating systems, and sequencing
  • Load and unload trucks and trailers using hand trucks, pallet jacks, forklifts, or overhead cranes as authorized
  • Deliver materials, supplies, and fabricated steel to job sites or designated staging areas
  • Assist steel fabricators with positioning, handling, and staging of structural members throughout the fabrication process
  • Perform general housekeeping and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
  • Support other shop personnel and operations as directed by the foreman or supervisor
Requirements & Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Prior experience in industrial painting, surface preparation, or general labor in a manufacturing or construction environment is a plus
  • Familiarity with structural steel or metal fabrication operations preferred but not required — on-the-job training provided

Skills & Abilities:

  • Great attention to detail with a commitment to quality workmanship
  • Ability to read and follow blueprints, work orders, and coating specifications
  • Basic knowledge of paint mixing, primers, topcoats, and application methods preferred
  • Must have a good driving record; valid driver's license required for material delivery duties
  • Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively within a team environment
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to take on varied tasks as needed

Certifications & Licenses:

  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required
  • Forklift certification preferred or willingness to obtain upon hire
Physical

Requirements & Qualifications:
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods during an 8–10 hour shift
  • Regularly lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs.; occasionally assist with heavier lifts using mechanical aids
  • Work in a structural steel fabrication shop environment subject to heat, noise, paint fumes, dust, and metal debris
  • Work at varying heights including the use of ladders and elevated platforms as required
  • Use of hands and arms to operate spray equipment, and hand tools throughout the shift
Work Environment:

This position works primarily in a structural steel fabrication shop. The environment includes exposure to paint fumes and solvents, heavy equipment, overhead crane operations, loud machinery, metal dust, and varying temperatures. All employees are required to adhere to Hancock Structural Steel’s safety program and OSHA standards at all times. Required PPE — including respirators, safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toed boots — is provided and mandatory.
