The Science of Communicating Science
Senior Investigator: William
C. Ray
Science has several fundamental challenges that span from the work required to acquire data to the process of making the results useful. Amongst these, one of the challenges frequently overlooked is communicating the results so that people can understand and use them. Scientists often make the mistake of assuming that if they make the data available, those who need the results will invest the effort in analyzing and understanding the data.
This mistake ignores basic human nature. As a consequence, both in the public eye, for policymakers, and even for other scientists, questionable science that is communicated well often overshadows good science that is communicated poorly. As part of the data management and sharing arm of a project to develop and promote the cultivation of new crops in the US, this project will challenge participants to develop and conduct experiments to explore and test different ways of communicating science.
