The Water Maintenance Technician II performs semi-skilled to skilled work related to the operation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of municipal water distribution infrastructure. This role requires demonstrated technical proficiency and is typically filled through internal promotion from Technician I, or by candidates with direct related industry experience. Work is performed under the supervision of the Water Foreman.

Perform monthly water shut-offs. Install, replace, and maintain water meters. Conduct system pressure checks; identify, locate, and repair water leaks within the distribution system. Perform the annual fire hydrant flushing program, including associated maintenance and repairs. Conduct valve exercising programs and complete repairs as needed. Perform utility locates for water mains, service lines, meters, valves, and Town-owned fiber optic infrastructure. Assist with repairs of water main and service line breaks as directed.

Assist with the collection of water samples in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements. Support inspections related to certifications of occupancy. Operate a variety of light and heavy equipment in the performance of assigned duties. Perform routine pre- and post-operation safety inspections; conduct minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment; maintain accurate inspection and maintenance records. Promote a culture of safety by adhering to all Town and Department safety policies and procedures.

Perform duties requiring the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including work in confined spaces requiring ventilation to mitigate exposure to hazardous gases or fumes. Enter, update, and complete work orders in the Town's work order management system. Accurately enter and interpret data within asset management systems, including processing service orders and utility billing requests. Respond to customer inquiries and complaints as directed by the Water Foreman, maintaining professionalism and effective communication.

Communicate and collaborate effectively with Town staff and the public. Assist in the training and mentoring of Level I Technicians as directed by the Foreman. Assist the Streets Division with snow removal operations during winter months. Participate in the set-up and tear-down of Town events and festivals as assigned. Work a rotating on-call schedule, providing after-hours, weekend, and holiday support to multiple divisions as needed.

May be required to work overtime, varied shifts, weekends, and during emergency situations.

Knowledge of maintenance, operation, and proper safety protocols of small engine machinery. Ability to read and comprehend a variety of written material, including manuals, maps, instructions, and safety information, and to perform common mathematical operations, accurately record numerical data. Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing. Strong problem-solving skills that include the ability to analyze and resolve a variety of issues and recognize when to elevate.

Ability to complete daily operations in a competent and safe manner, and perform a wide range of strenuous physical and manual tasks in an outdoor environment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, other employees, vendors, contractors, and the public. Ability to use standard office equipment, computers, tablets, and software, including the basic use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, GIS mapping, and databases.

Ability to keep the workplace clean and organized, equipment clean and serviced, and take care of Town-owned assets appropriately. Ability to work both collaboratively and independently. Ability to monitor SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system(s) to ensure stability, security, and performance of industrial processes. With support, respond to alarms and abnormalities. Knowledge of the techniques and materials used in the maintenance and repair of, but not limited to, streets, storm drains, water lines, and repairs.

Knowledge of and ability to detect the defects and faults likely to occur in construction, maintenance, and repair work.

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Two (2) years of previous water maintenance experience with a municipal water supplier/distribution system is required. For promotion to this level, you must possess a minimum of two (2) years as a Water Technician I with the Town of Firestone.…
