Position: Engineering Director 1

Overview

GAI Consultants is seeking an Engineering Manager in our Indiana Roadway Design Group to be responsible for leading the successful delivery of scope, schedule, budget, and quality for projects within the Ohio River Valley Business Sector of GAI’s Transportation Business Unit. This position will directly manage and/or oversee all engineering aspects of multi-discipline roadway design projects as well as participate in marketing and business development opportunities.

Clients include the Indiana Department of Transportation, the City of Indianapolis, and other county and municipal clients. This is the primary client contact for GAI and may supervise and mentor engineering staff. Significant client interaction is required and the candidate should possess strategic skills to identify and develop a marketing strategy for winning project opportunities.

Key Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Indiana (required or ability to obtain within a defined time frame)
  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive engineering experience, preferably in transportation or municipal infrastructure
  • Proven experience managing engineering teams and overseeing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrated experience working with INDOT and local Indiana municipalities

Minimum Years Of Experience
  • 15+
Education
  • B.S. or M.S. in Engineering; master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred
Certification/Licensure
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Indiana; reciprocity in multiple states
Technical Responsibilities
  • Provide technical oversight and QA/QC for design deliverables
  • Ensure compliance with INDOT standards, policies, manuals, and review processes
  • Review and approve engineering plans, specifications, cost estimates, and reports
  • Oversee adherence to state, local, and federal regulations, including permitting and environmental requirements
  • Resolve technical challenges and guide project teams on complex engineering solutions
  • Ensure consistent application of company standards and best practices
Project and Task Management
  • Oversees multiple large or multi-discipline project teams
  • Develops projects needed to accomplish the objectives of the practice
  • Evaluates project management plans for complex engineering projects
  • Develops risk mitigation plans to address project risks
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of leaders and teams
Management Responsibility
  • Lead and manage engineering staff, including hiring, mentoring, performance management, and professional development
  • Oversee planning, design, execution, and delivery of all Indiana-based engineering projects
  • Serve as the primary technical and managerial liaison with INDOT, Indianapolis DPW, and municipal clients
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, budget, and in compliance with all applicable standards
  • Provide strategic input for workload forecasting, staffing plans, and resource allocation
  • Support business development efforts, including proposal development, client pursuits, and interviews
  • Coordinate with other business sectors and disciplines to ensure integrated project delivery
  • Maintain consistent communication with leadership regarding project performance, risks, and staffing needs
Communication Skills
  • Negotiates critical and controversial issues with leadership
  • Represents the organization at important functions and conferences
