Position Details

About the Position:

First Internet Bank provides paid internship opportunities designed to give students hands-on experience in a professional banking environment and real-world exposure to risk management and related control functions within a financial institution. As the Risk Intern you will be assigned to a risk-related business area, which may include Enterprise Risk Management, Compliance, Fraud Operations, Bank Secrecy Act and Anti-Money Laundering (BSA/AML), or another risk and control function.

You will contribute to meaningful work, collaborate with team members and business partners, and develop an understanding of how the assigned area helps identify, assess, monitor, communicate, and mitigate risk. Specific training, projects, systems, and learning objectives will be defined through a department-specific onboarding plan.

What You Will Do:

  • Learn the responsibilities, regulatory considerations, workflows, systems, and business purpose of the assigned risk area through structured training, observation, and hands-on assignments.
  • Assist with risk, compliance, fraud, or BSA/AML research and analysis appropriate to the assigned area.
  • Support the collection, review, validation, organization, and maintenance of records, data, alerts, reports, schedules, inventories, agreements, policies, procedures, or other department documentation.
  • Assist with monitoring, testing, reviews, investigations, issue tracking, regulatory change support, third-party risk activities, business continuity activities, or other control processes as assigned.
  • Prepare or update reports, charts, graphs, presentations, summaries, meeting materials, and other work products used to communicate risk-related information.
  • Participate in internal meetings and collaborate with colleagues, business lines, external partners, or service providers, as appropriate to the assignment.
  • Help identify trends, exceptions, potentially suspicious or fraudulent activity, emerging requirements, or opportunities to strengthen processes and controls, escalating matters to the appropriate team member.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, secure, privileged when applicable, and confidential information while following Bank policies, procedures, controls, and professional standards.
  • Demonstrate curiosity, sound judgment, analytical thinking, attention to detail, accountability, and a willingness to learn new concepts and systems.
  • Perform other duties and complete additional learning assignments as requested.

What We're Looking For:

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree, preferably in business, finance, accounting, risk management, compliance, criminal justice, data analytics, cybersecurity, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in banking, enterprise risk, regulatory compliance, fraud prevention, BSA/AML, governance, or a related area.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint; experience with data analysis or reporting tools may be helpful depending on the assignment.
  • Strong analytical, research, organization, data management, problem-solving, and multitasking skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate with internal and external partners.
  • High level of attention to detail, accuracy, professionalism, discretion, and respect for confidential or sensitive information.
  • Ability to manage assigned priorities, meet deadlines, adapt to new information, and learn new regulatory, operational, and system concepts.
  • Ability to meet the scheduling and on-site work expectations established for the internship program and assigned department.

Working Conditions/Demands:

  • Professional office setting.
  • Primarily sedentary position requiring long periods of time working at a computer.
  • Must be able to move throughout the office and buildings to obtain or relay information.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
