Kennel Coordinator

Pay Range: $17.00–$18.00 per hour

The role in one sentence

You’ll help lead daily kennel operations—coaching the team, keeping care standards high, and making sure every dog (and cat) gets what they need to move safely and successfully toward adoption.

Why this job matters

The kennel is where structure meets compassion. As Kennel Coordinator, you’re the steady hand that keeps the day moving: clean and consistent routines, timely communication of animal needs, and real-time guidance for staff—so animals thrive and adopters feel confident. You’ll also step in as second-in-command when leadership is off‑site.

What you’ll do

You’ll assist in managing and coordinating kennel operations, including:

  • Help onboard and train new animal care employees; provide ongoing coaching.
  • Perform required kennel duties and maintain a supervisory understanding of department protocols.
  • Ensure daily cleaning tasks are completed on time and according to protocols to maintain a clean, disease‑free environment.
  • Ensure each animal receives appropriate food/diet, clean bedding, enrichment, exercise, access to water, and a clean living space.
  • Intervene/re‑direct staff as needed to keep the team on task and protocols followed.
  • Support customer interactions related to showing animals and helping match pets with adopters; address adopter concerns professionally and promptly.
  • Communicate animal needs/concerns to leadership and appropriate departments to ensure timely action.
  • Ensure compliance with HSHC safety, sanitation, and personnel policies and departmental protocols.
  • Coordinate a monthly position schedule for the kennel team.
  • Ensure animals needing transport are ready for volunteers.
  • Complete and report weekly food/supply inventory to the Animal Care Manager as requested.
  • Maintain clean, organized storage and work areas (including cleaning hubs, hallways, kennel kitchen, visiting rooms, indoor exercise area, and outdoor play yards).
  • Ensure medical books are filled out and turned in daily by 3pm; complete an evening “pre‑check out” prior to closing manager checkout.
  • Provide performance input/feedback as requested; may participate in hiring and disciplinary processes.
  • Serve as second-in-command and step into the manager’s role when they are not on‑site, ensuring coverage and continuity.
