Responsibilities
- Provide general maintenance to City vehicles in support of operating activities.
- Read work orders and maintenance forms to ascertain vehicle condition and required maintenance modifications.
- Diagnose and isolate cause of vehicle malfunctions.
- Interpret and apply information in manufacturers' manuals, lube orders, and other relevant data.
- Adjust operating mechanisms (valves, tappets, carburetors, governors, ignition systems, points, central linkage, clutches, brakes) using feeler gauges, dial indicators, special gauges and templates.
- Time magnetos, distributors, injectors, and injection pumps using timing pins and lights.
- Replace subassemblies, components, and accessories such as starters, fuel pumps, carburetors, generators, radiators, universal joints, brake shoes, engine mounts, low‑pressure lines and fittings.
- Instruct and assist lower‑skilled personnel in maintenance practices and procedures.
- Operate wrecker or service trucks.
- Observe all job‑site safety regulations.
- May be required to work overtime.
- Tear down and reassemble components such as engines, DIFF, TRAN, pumps, starters, gen, hyd, cyl.
- Be held responsible for tools and equipment supplied by the City.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid operator's license upon reporting to work.
- Ability to operate power tools, alignment machines, wheel balancing machines, and engine analyzing machines.
- Ability to lift over 50 lbs; carry up to 15 lbs.
- Ability to perform straight pulling, reaching above the shoulder, pushing, walking, standing, and kneeling.
- Rapid mental/muscular coordination simultaneously.
- Ability to read and understand operating manuals, service manuals, and written instructions.
- Basic knowledge of repair procedures and techniques applicable to vehicle repair.
- Must have hand tools relevant to this type of repair upon reporting for work.
- Pass pre‑employment physical.
Work is performed primarily in an automotive garage; occasional exposure to various outside weather conditions and constant noise, dust/dirt, asbestos, fumes, smoke, gases, greases, oils, electrical energy, vibrations, and solvents. May work on slippery surfaces, around machinery with moving parts or moving objects/vehicles, hands in water or wet material. Incumbent works primarily alone; hours are generally specific. Unusual fatigue factors exist with these conditions.
