The Historic Trades Specialist – Carpenter will be responsible for woodworking tasks in both the modern and historic carpenter shops. The majority of time will be spent demonstrating the carpenter’s trade to guests using historically appropriate tools. This position will also work with the Manager of Historic Trades and others as assigned to perform repairs, maintenance, and reproduction of Conner Prairie’s buildings and structures, both modern and historic, utilizing tools, methods and materials appropriate to maintaining an authentic environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Maintains tools, materials and environments for both modern and historic woodworker shops.
- Maintains and repairs both historic and modern structures on grounds.
- Works to provide positive guest experiences, while working on the historic grounds and in a support role through reproduction of historic objects, teaching workshops and interacting with volunteer staff.
- Provides carpentry and woodworking skills to other departments as needed.
- Must be capable of general carpentry.
- Must be capable of determining appropriate materials and tools for all types of carpentry work.
- Must be able to determine time frames, costs and all resources needed to complete a job both historic and modern.
- Must work as a team player.
- Must be able to work cross-departmentally.
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Education and ExperienceHigh school degree or GED required. General understanding of basic carpentry skills, both hand and power tool processes. Experience working with youth and adults in an informal learning environment preferred.
